Smelly belly button

MrinaliniShilpa by MrinaliniShilpa Standing(July 18th) (rank 500+)

Our Doctor adviced us against using any remedies for the belly button. He asked us to use a pinch of salt after Rishan was bathed. His cord was out on the 5th day of his birth. however if it is smelling then you should seek medical attention immediately.

Question:

My baby girl is 11 days old and her cord stump is about to come away, it is hanging by a thread. But it STINKS, I remember Caitlins did as well and my midwife told me to use a little metho to dry it out, but at the hospital they told me not to before I left.
The main reason I ask is although the main bit is coming off the inside is still full of stuff, (she had the longest piece of cord ever!) so I want to dry it out.
have you used Metho? Was anyone else told not to?

Re: Smelly belly button

Here in the U.S., the most common advice for parents is to never bathe babies (sponge bath only) until their umbilical cord stump falls off. In the meantime, to use alcohol wipes or use a cotton ball wet with alcohol to drop some on the base of the umbilical cord stump.
