A tip to help your child heal after an operation.

monyq83 by monyq83 Young Parent(July 27th) (rank 14th)

Hi Minti,

I just thought Id do a quick advice about something that is happening to my family at the moment.

You see my son Jaryd (who has some hyperactivity problems) went in for Surgery last week to have his tonsils and adenoids removed.

Now

you can understand how important it is for a child like himself to get sufficient rest after the operation so that all the proper healing can take place.

Well you can imagine my surprise when I finally realised that it might be the pain killers he is on that are making him super duper hyper and why I cant get him to rest his voice.

His doctor at the hospital suggested that I get him some medicine called Pain Stop which is a codeine based pain killer that is supposed to put him to sleep or at least calm him down.

Only thing is the geniuses at the medical lab didnt think about what effect the medicine will have on ADD/ADHD kids if they add red food colouring to the mix to make it pleasing on the eye.

Oh my god. I took an angel to hospital and brought home a monster child.

The coloured pain killers have totally had a bad reaction on him and he is running around like a child that has just drank a keg of red bull.

Please parents, if your child is going in for surgery, or even is just ill and needs some rest, DONT GIVE THEM PAINKILLERS THAT HAVE FOOD COLOURING ADDED TO IT!!!!

Believe me Im tearing my hair out now and I wish someone else hadve written this advice before me so i didnt make this mistake.

Its getting so bad that he might have to go back to hospital because the wound is starting to blister and bleed in the back of his throat because he has just had no rest.

Dont make the same mistake I did, be pain-relief-wise, parents!!!

I have found that most baby/children's pain killers we have are clearly marked regarding whether or not colouring or flavouring has been added.  We avoid these, as it really can have an adverse affect on any child, and I guess it is just another example of the importance of questioning your medical professional instead of taking everything they say to do as gospel.

Hi Mony,

What a great warning for parents . . Sadly many dr's don't take the time to either read a child's file properly or get to know the child. Many children react to 'RED' and docotrs should NOT advise parents to use medication like this particulary if a child has a pre-existing hyeractive problem . . .

I hope you little man settles down for you shortly . .  Thanks for the article

Cheers Kellz

OMG!!

The Doctors should have investigated him as their patient a little better than - 'take this'

Just a thought - and so as to compliment Your and Kellz's latest advice , maybe you both should link the two.   They go together nicely!!

Thanks for sharing mony - 'cause its these kinda things that constantly get over looked

Love and hugs to you

OB

This is good advice about pain relief, not so much about healing after an op tho.
