Cows milk protein ALLERGY - my story

Ravenheart by Ravenheart Talking(August 4th) (rank 166th)

When jayde was about 4 months old I started to notice eczema apearring on the face around her mouth and on her arms and legs. So i took her to the docs, totally not expecting him to want to do allergy testing... after testing her we found out she was

allergic to Cows milk protein, CMP for short.  Im was slightly shocked becasue she was breastfed, not on solids so how was she getting CMP??? Apparently it was  coming thru in my breast milk.

These are the most common signs of an allergy to cows milk protein.

  • diarrhea
  • tummy pain or cramps
  • vomiting
  • eczema or skin rash

So My diet had to change (:( no more ice cream for me... ) Soy milk, youghurt and icecream lol. And when jayde started on solids she had soy products to, they have a great variety these days so it made life easier...  If I had been bottlefeeding I would have switched to soy based formula as well.

My family tho didnt quiet understand, some even thought I was making it up and to test me gave her things like icecream beihind my back.. i was so pissed of becasue she would come home with rashes and be in pain... After I explained to them it can cause anaphylaxis, even tho it is very rare.. they started to take me a bit more seriously. I think it may have been becasue I was so young.. 16 and they just didnt expect me to know what I was on about. GRRRR anyway by the time she was 12 months old we asked her doc if we could  introduce dairy products again and he sugested to do it very slowly and when we did she seemed to be over the allergy.

Altho she doesnt get any of the nasty symptoms, 6 yrs on, she reacts funny to having too much dairy so we limit it from her diet where we can. She loves cheese and youghurt but milk on its own usually end up coming back up...

    Hope this helps

    xoxo

my twins got tested for allergies today (with skin prick test) and it shows a definite allergy to milk. They are now to stay away from anything containing milk for 1 year. With all the information that was given to me today, I forgot to mention that I am still breastfeeding and that I have milk on my diet. Thank you for sharing your experience. I will ask the doctor anyway, but at least now I know that the milk protein crosses breastmilk.

    Hi Angie,

Thanks for this article . . . My two yr old is lactose intolerant as well as having many other food allergies. Like you people went and snuck things to my daughter behind my back because they found it unbelievable that she had so many allergies. What these silly and selfish people didn't realise was that they were causing her serious pain. I ended up warning them that if they didn't stop sneaking her little bites here and there then we simply would not visit . .  It was very frustrating . .

    Cheers Kellz

    Good advice.

Age truly doesn't matter - as a mother we find out and we KNOW - what we don't know we LEARN about.  Good on you for sticking to your guns and getting your family to see sense!

    Peace
