Constipation in 3 week old Baby

Anonymous Author (August 6th)

Re: bowels are stuck!
Asked by smashie

Question:

hi my 3 1/2 week old bubs bowels haven't opened all day and she seems to be in pain.....any advice of how i can help her?

My Advice:

Hi Smashie,

I

feel for you as there is nothing worse that having a wee little one in pain . . ..  If you are breastfeeding then its quite normal for your angel to not use her bowels for a few days at a time. If you are bottle feeding then your little angel should pass a poop at least everyday however every second day is not unusual.

Here are some idea's :

Massage - massage is great on so many levels and can really help if your little one is constipated . . Here is a link to a site that has some great info on baby massage and also techniques . . CLICK HERE and also here is a video on a technique that you could try . .

Bath and massage - Quite often a nice warm bath can do wonders for a little angel with wind and/or constipation. So if your little angel is very upset try giving her a bath prior to a massage. Whilst she is in the bath you could try holding her legs up onto her belly and gently rolling her legs in a small circle BUT be prepared as quite often you will end up with a poop in the bath . . .

Stool softeners -  I am NOT a huge fan of these as if they are overused that can cause your bub to have a lazy bowel but I do know that sometimes your little one may need a little help . . A much better alternative is to use a baby suppository which you can purchase from your local pharmacist . . .

I hope this gives you a little help, I hope your little angel recovers soon . . . . My little angel is now 2 and still loves her massages, this is a great bonding time for her and I as well as a great way for her to relax etc.

Cheers Kellz

Great advice Kelz, I remember Jaya being constipated whe young that badly that i had to use suppositries with her. I hated the fact that i had to place them in her bottom since she was so tiny we triend everything but that doid not work onky supposiries did the job.

I wish i had this advice back then

Thanks hun

Hi matey,

Thanks for your feedback .  .Suppositries are so much fun . . NOT . . . My poor Sam really struggled with constipation as a bub and I would try every other technique before using the dreading torpedo like suppostiry . .

Hi Rukia,

Thanks for your feedback . .  Quite often young mums and alike get very frustrated and upset when it comes to thier young babies and constipation. Sadly this is something I know way to much about as Sam suffered chronically due to her Epilepsy which also caused her bowels to become blocked . . .

I hope your aunty had some success . . .

Cheers Kellz

I've often had to use those suppositories with my little 'un - being a persistent constipation sufferer myself, I "grew up with" those things and I know exactly how effective they are!
