Pre - Compulsary Schooling

Sparkysgirl by Sparkysgirl Standing(August 7th) (rank 500+)

Many parents face the hard decision of whether to send their child to school at the age of 4 or 5 in pre-compulsary schooling.

I myself am a teacher, Early Childhood trained, and I believe that Kindy/preprimary is an important step for kids. I see kids coming through in

year 1 who have not attended formal schooling before, and on many occasions their speech, language and social skills can often be lagging compared to the other kids.

Kindy/pre is play based, so the child will learn in a fun and stimulating environment. The learn social skills like sharing and turn taking, and how to act around others. They learn the basics like colours, letters, numbers and counting, and they are assisted in their physical devlopment through physical education and movement activities. In addition, they become used to the formal school system and can better adjust to the classroom setting in year 1.

It is also beneficial for any support services, as the earlier any issues are detected, the sooner/better equipped the school is to offer referrals, advice, etc to try and investigate and provide support.

It is also more formal and educational than Day Care... and often cheaper too.

Re: Pre - Compulsary Schooling

My son loves preschool and as he turned 5 in June I struggled with whether to send him to school this year or not.  WE elected to keep him at preschool and half way through the year upped his days to 3 days a week.  For him it  has been wonderful - now he is more confident, in control and at a level ready for school.  At the beginning of this year he could do all the requirements of school and would have been fine academically, but the extra year in a play-based environment has done so much for hie emotional state and his learning.  I only wish school could be as fun as preschool has been for him!

Great first article babe. Told ya that you had great things to share with this community.

I was a little reluctant to put my kids in Kindy and preschool but I am so glad I did ccause we wouldnt of known about Alex and his Autism. I think it should be composary to have these.

Charlie did 3 year old kindy last year at day care and she loved that.

Great advice and i was under the impression that pre school and kinda wasnt compulsery in tassie, but seems that it has changed.. Which is great as the children learn so much for participating in these programs...

All my 3 children have all attended pre school and kinda and absolutely loved it....

Re: Pre - Compulsary Schooling

I hear ya Kellz.  This is a great article as in the UK there is no requirement for children before schooling starts and while there is plentiful provision some children can be at a nursery whereas others can be at home all those years, or at a pre-school where there is a more formal set-up in preparation for school routines.

Re: Pre - Compulsary Schooling

Hi there,

Where I live in Tasmania, Australia Kindergarten and Preschool are both compulsory. It wasn't until recently that I learned that this is not the case in some other Australian states, this shocked me as I strongly feel that both Kinder and prep are essential to help our children receive a great education . .

Cheers Kellz
