Flaming - what does it mean?

Anonymous Author (August 21st)

As of recent times, there have been members accused and accusing of flaming, so for everyone's benefit, I am writing my definetion of flaming along with a dictionary definetion just so we all have a clear understanding of what it means to flame.

Dictionary meaning:

Noun.

1. Burning gas or vapour, as from wood or coal, that is undergoing combustion; a portion of ignited gas or vapour.

2. Often, flames. The state or condition of blazing combustion: to burst into flames.

3. Any flamelike condition; glow, inflamed condition.

4. Brilliant light; scintillating luster.

5. Bright colour; streak or patch of colour.

6. Flame colour

7. Intense ardor, zeal or passion

8. informal - an object of ones passionate love; sweetheart - he's taking out his new flame tonight.

9. Computer Slang, an angry, critical, disparaging electronic message, as in a email or newsgroup post .

Here I will just skip to 13.

Verb.

13. Computer Slang - to send an angry, critical or disparaging electronic message.

So that is the formal meaning of Flaming, my interpretation, basicalling if you say something negative ABOUT a person, you are flaming them. To say something nasty about a person because of their race, gender, religion, age, or because you simply disagree  with them on a particular subject or the way they do something, or using something they have told you in confidence against then to make them look a lesser person, is all flaming. If you are trying to make some one appear less than you, 9 times out of 10 they will be the better person out of the two or three or how ever many people are involved. Befor you type something about any one, think, is this going to make people think negatively about this person, if it is, you are about to flame them. Would you like to be flamed, I think not, so treat others as you would like to be treated. To be an adult you must act like an adult, so can we please all start acting like adults and in turn we will all get the respect we deserve.

If you have read this, you now can not use the excuse of being uncertain about what flaming is. Hope you enjoyed the read, and I hope that this will help prevent the hurt of another precious minti member being burned by people they come to for help, people they may trust, people they may call their friends.

Karen. xx.

Re: Flaming - what does it mean?

There seem to be many false complaints in regard to flaming, so it seems it is something that needs to be clarified, though I think admin do an admirable job of this.

Sometimes people seem to feel they are being flamed, and take exception to a mere difference of opinion, however admin make it clear here.

Re: Flaming - what does it mean?

Here's another good blog/article on flaming that defines it quite well too.  I think that often people are a little quick to jump the gun and claim they are being flamed, when indeed they are not.  This part of it is a good definition of what online flaming is:

'The flaming text will usually say something offensive about a person's lifestyle, their family, and their friends, even if the the flaming does not even know the person.  It is all done for shock value, and to trigger negative responses.  However, it is NOT considered to be flaming text when someone is stating their views and opinions, even though they may not be popular with the rest of the crowd.  Unless someone is personally attacked, it is not considered flaming.'

Of course, it pays to consider whether or not someone may feel over sensitive on certain topics, and we have had a few topics that do the rounds regularly on parenting sites that often result in 'heated discussions'.  Especially things like abortion, breast feeding, and circumcision... It is an art to get your point across without personally attacking someone sometimes.  It is also just as important that people are aware that just because someone doen't agree with them, that they are not necessarily flaming them.  Everyone has an equal right to express their opinion, and I have seen, that as this site evolves, people's skills in this area improve all the time.

Re: Flaming - what does it mean?

I couldn't agree more, once again, I am not directing this at a particular person or persons, I am merely trying to state how I interpret what it means to flame some one, hence he reason I say, saying anything negitive about a person they ,may change anothers veiw of them is flaming. Is this statement some how untrue?

Re: Flaming - what does it mean?

I was using this as an example for people to clarify the difference between what is, and what isn't flaming.  Sometimes people don't express their true opinion as they are worried that it will be seen as flaming.  I think the information from the article mentioned helps make it a little clearer, and compliments what you have already written.

Re: Flaming - what does it mean?

Thanks very much, I have not myself been flamed and nor am I blaming any one of flaming. Nor Hvae I said admin is doing less than an admiral job. How ever Minti tos and code of honour simply mentions that (disrespectful behaviour / flaming is not acceptle and is an automatic breach. It does not have a detailed explanation as to what flaming is, or how some one may decide if they have or have not been "flamed". That is all I am trying to clarify in my article.

Thanks again for your comment, really appreciate it, though it leaves me quiet confused as to weather you may of found it useful or not???

Karen.

My apologies for any confusion, yes, I do think it is helpful, and yes, you are right, admin don't really give a full explanation, so any information is helpful for all members of the site.

Thanks Cath, Apparently some people think not, hmm guilty consciences perhaps, These people can't even write a reason as to why they don't think its a good article. Perhaps they are just spineless.

Re: Flaming - what does it mean?

Hey Trace thanks, look out for another one in the next few days. I think some people have forgotton what minti is about and are not using it for the right reasons. I think the rankings need to be scrapped. It may help put a stop to some of this vindictive behaviours.

Karen. xx.
