Elimination Communication with Rishan at 3 months

MrinaliniShilpa by MrinaliniShilpa Standing(August 29th) (rank 500+)

I came across this phrase while Rishan was just two months old. It so happened that I felt he was telling me that he was about to pass urine. I am a keen observer and found that he could pee while being put in the wash basin. I was excited.

I waited till he completed three months, was gifted with a baby commode and i wanted to try it on. Rishan resoponded brilliantly. I thought it could be wrong to make a kid do something like this. Spoke to the Doctor and he said all is ok till the time the baby responds well to it. I felt assured. This brought me to buying another simple potty that would fit his little bum and make him feel comfortable while he is doing his bit. At 5 months age i realised my baby would control himself while being carried for upto 30 mins. I stopped putting him on nappy sheets since then. Ibrought nickers, and that is all that i am using since. Only if i am getting to go out is when i use diapers.

My hubby's Grandma did this in the war as she was a midwife and worked in a orphanage type place. it saved heaps on washing, but has been linked to later problems. they used warmed steel potties and cold ones 30 mins after a feed. they also used to cool the babies feet down too

Hi there,

Although I respect everyone's right to try new and different things I  am afraid that I would be very very cautious of this . .  There are risks involved to this and I believe that you really need to weigh up the pro's and cons . .  Many Dr's etc believe that it is not normal to expect a baby to be able to have this amount of control and that using this method can in fact cause lazy bowels and bladder problems later on . . .

I have looked into both sides and have also spoken to midwives and child hood nurses and I have decided that I would not do this myself due to the risks that may occur later on . . . I beleive that you should take the time to enjoy you baby being a baby and not to want them to grow to quickly  . . .

Also I'd like to add that a close friend of mine tried this with her eldest and now her child is 8 yrs old and is a chronic bed wetter and is also a lazy toileter which leads to many accidents . .

Thanks for your article and I wish you well in the future . .

Cheers Kellz

Re: Elimination Communication with Rishan at 3 months

Hey thanks for ur concern. It is nice of u to have told me this. Somehow, things just fell into place between Rishan and me. The pedtrician was insistant right from  his birth that i stay away from diapers. I too felt may be i could without them. Like anyone else i started on with nappies, but once it happened that he without one and i just rushed him to the wash basin. he instantly responded. he just 3months old then. Somehow, what u wrote of concerns me too so i did discuss this with his doc and he says it is fine till the time i dont get too tired. There are times i get tired but he at the moment looks very comfortable even at nights.

Thansk once again for writing on and sharing your views with me.

Regards.

Well done!  I was never willing to give EC a go as I don't have the patience - but I think you've done really well and it sounds far more sensible than using nappies if you can do it!
