Learning to spell - let them make their own word photo gallery

katiepiatt by katiepiatt Talking Back(September 2008) (rank 119th)

This is a new subject for me - but I'm learning fast and would welcome everyone elses additions to what I've worked out so far!

My 5 year old has just entered Year 1 (Uk schools - its the year after reception) and has started bring home "spelling"

words he's supposed to learn each week. Well he can't read more than "cat" and "dog" yet and is struggling to make the link from sounding out letters to actually forming a word.

So I'm working with him, without trying to push him or switch him off reading, but finding words EVERYWHERE!

For example, this week we're learning "the" - and luckily it's on almost every sign we can find. We let him use our digital camera, so if we find the word, then he can take a photo of it. I really like the idea we can build up a photo gallery of words in interesting ways that he created himself. Then while looking at pics of our day out on the train, his words will pop up and give me extra opportunities to work with him (without him realising!)!

We've also started a star chart - one star a day for when he tries hard at doing some writing, or reads some new words.

I think your idea's of the digital camera & star chart are great how creative. Getting your son involved with the digital camera is a fun way to teach him letters and words.

What a good idea it would help a lot of the parents too , It would make it so much more interesting for the children I'm sure. We always had star charts when our children were younger, and it proved a great encouragement

A very good piece of advice
