Sore breast after weening

Mumof5 by Mumof5 Speaking(August 2006) (rank 500+)

I recently stopped breastfeeding my baby and have had sore boobs ever since. Is there any way to help stop the milk coming and to ease the soreness?

Hi, You have to take things slowly when you decide to ween onto a bottle.

Your

body needs time to stop producing milk you cant just turn it off like a tap.

You run the risk of infection.

Cut the feeds down by one every few days then your body will get the message to stop producing milk and you wont be sore.

Seeing you have already stopped you need to express just enough milk out of your breast to make them comfortable but no more.

Eventually your body will stop producing milk.

Cheers Cyndii

Re: Sore breast after weening

I know how you feel - I was in soooooooo much pain this week trying to ween my son...I remembered something my midwife told me and it WORKED!  Get a cabbage leaf, try to keep it as intact as possible, Put it in your bra...overnight my breasts have not engorged since...amazing!  Give it a try. I agree.

I agree with you. Weaning gradually will lessen the likelihood of a lot of discomfort when it comes to weaning as supposed to just cold turkey stopping. My son was only nursing 2x a day when I weaned and even then I did it gradually and took 2 weeks to stop.

I had no choice but to stop straight away, my Dr advised me to express under a hot shower, it took about a week for it to completely stop, in between I put cold washers on my boobs.  Otherwise yes cut the feeding down and it will stop
