He's NOT Stupid !!!!

nell18-3 by nell18-3 Young Parent(September 2008) (rank 1st)

My son believes he is STUPID

For a Mother it is heartbreaking to see your child to just accept this belief he has

All because he has grown up being told he was stupid

He isn't stupid at all

He is absolutely beautiful

But he has got ADHD !!!

If I had a penny for everytime my son has been called Stupid, I would be a very rich woman. I used to HATE hearing it. I would intervene or tell my son to ignore it but too late we all know you can't take back words once said.

Before his diagnosis with ADHD, Yes I admit I too assumed he was just naturally clumsy. If my son decided on even a drink of water, then nothing else was in his mind but getting that drink of water, so if that meant tripping over things, bumping into people, spilling the water on the way back with his drink...........he would say sorry but keep going. The only thing on his mind was the drink of water !!!

That is how my son's brain works, his brain is controlled by impulse, he has no logical planning that we all take for granted. Everything he does is an impulse.

When he was younger, even shopping was a scary process, his impluse would be to dart in a shop that attracted his attention. There was no thought process of telling me he was going to the shop, asking if we could all go to the shop, telling me what he had seen in the shop window. No his brain would react to the impulse of What he had seen as passing being the only thing in his mind and getting to it fast !!!!!

But because his thought process was different that the rest of us. It does not mean he is STUPID!!!!!

I am now watching the damage that has been done to him over the years, by constantly being called Stupid!

My son recently started Secondary Education, he started at the school bursting with excitement, loving the fact that his older brother was going to watch over him, but his self esteem is low. He is having hassles with some of his class mates, and being excluded from groups so is spending most of the time in his new school either shadowing his older brother or being totally on his own.

What does he think of this???

"Its my fault Mum, you know I'm stupid !!!!!!!"

GRRRRR MY SON IS NOT STUPID!!!!!!!!!

He will get through this, I will never stop filling him with confidence and one day my son will walk through the school doors, confident and proud of himself and ALL that he has achieved.

My reason for writing this is to warn all parents.

Please don't ever call your child Stupid!!!!!! The negative roots of being called a name such as that, go far deeper than you could ever possibly imagine

If the word STUPID is used then go to great lengths to make sure the child knows that it was the act they did that was stupid, not the person they are!!!

No Good will ever come from underminding your childs self confidence and self esteem.

Re: He's NOT Stupid !!!!

If parents had the ability to see into the future the damage that some of their behaviors did to their children I'm sure they'd refrain.  I can't imagine ever telling my children they're stupid.

I hope that one day, too my child will exude confidence in himself!

Thanks for the blog.

Re: He's NOT Stupid !!!!

Sad isn't it !!!!

I think MOST parents would refrain, sadly there would still be some that just don't think they ever do any wrong

All the best with your son

GRRRR!!!!!! No - he is not stupid!!  Poor little D...  I think there are a number of things you should never call a child - and "stupid" is near the top of that list.

Re: He's NOT Stupid !!!!

your son is not stupid just because people see someone acting different to them and the normal social order they immeadiatly think i that that person is either stupid or is below them they do this to make themsevles feel big and put people down around them . i have adhd and when was at primary school it wasnt the other children calling me stupid it was the teachers calling me stupid and lazy now that shouldn't happen from teachers they should encourage self esteem not crush it

Re: He's NOT Stupid !!!!

Hi honey,

Thanks for another GREAT article . . .  Like you I would be rich for everytime I hear a mum call a child "'stupid" . . . Ironically this is also a word that is NOT allowed to be used in my home and we also have a ban on the words "Dumb" and "Hate"

NO child is stupid or dumb and NO child or adult for that matter should ever hate anyone . .  Its okay to dislike someone but it is NOT okay to HATE another person . .  This is what I teach my children.

The words stupid and dumb are HUGE no no's and are words that I beleive should never be used when talking to or about children. Both these words can be damaging to a child in more ways that most would ever realise . . .  Children take these negative words on board and they stick, the child becomes less interactive and often suffers from major self esteem problems once they have heard these two words used in conjunction with them . .

One day I heard a teacher telling my eldest that she could "spell a certain word because she was not dumb or stupid" . .  My reaction to this teacher was swift and VERY forceful as I strode into the class and removed my daughter . .  Needless to say the teacher was reprimanded by the principal and my daughter was apologised to by this teacher . . .

Thanks again for a GREAT article . .

Cheers Kellz

Re: He's NOT Stupid !!!!

Thanks Kellz

I don't allow the HATE word either, but unfortunately the boys have a habit of using it a lot when they talk about a certain someone!!!!! But I tell them I don't believe they hate him they are just very hurt by his actions.

Whoever said "Sticks and Stones can hurt my bones, but words will never hurt me......" was lying !!!!

Re: He's NOT Stupid !!!!

Well explained Helen, we know the damage this word has done to Daniel don't we? and maybe you can save any other lad from getting caught up in this trap. We have seen and heard how sensible Daniel is so we must encourage him to do well at school.

It's a very good article

Love Mum

Re: He's NOT Stupid !!!!

Very true! Words hurt the most of all, IMO. I hope he makes some real friends nice & soon. At least in the meantime he has a great brother to hang out with.

E has a friend in her class with (I think) ADHD so this has given me insight into what makes him tick - thanks! He is lovely but very impulsive, and is way behind in his learning already, poor lad (he's just 5). I hope he wont hear "stupid" too often, but at least I can try to make sure E doesnt use it. So far I've just tried to emphasise that he "has to work much harder than you to learn the same things, which isnt fair for him, but that's just the way it is". I want her to realise that not everyone learns things as easily as she does!

I've heard far too many people call themselves stupid when something goes wrong, and I know from experience how I feel my heart sink if I use it on myself, so I make a habit of not using it, and correcting Dh if he does!

Of course, other words can be used harmfulyl too! I decided when E was little that if she did something silly, I would never say 'stupid', but instead I would use the phrase "silly billy". Seemed harmless to me! What I didnt realise was she then used this phrase in her childminders house, where "silly" is a banned word (the father had an aversion to it) and taught it to their youngest - oops! So now we say "big banana" - surely that's not going to be on anyones banned list or harm anyones self image???

Re: He's NOT Stupid !!!!

Thanks Kathryn

I had ADHD explained to me as "A Brain with no Brakes !!!" I think I know what they mean, certainly if I can see Daniel getting over excited all I have to say to him is "Know when to stop!" this is usually his brakes LOL

Re: He's NOT Stupid !!!!

Excellent advice..

I absolutely agree there is nothing worse then name calling, and even now some words that i get  called still hurts as it brings back memories from my childhood..

Daniel isnt Stupied, and those kids at his school will learn in time how special he is, and not having him as a friend is there loss not his....

xx cazza
