Build a "Family Wall"

hrs2004 by hrs2004 Young Parent(August 2006) (rank 20th)

A what?

Well, now that you have made or are in the process of making a family, shouldn't your home reflect that - the triumphs and pride in day-to-day life? So what can you do to show everyone in your little unit how important they are? Build a family

wall.

I would suggest that the ideal location is where everyone sits down to eat. Pick a wall and cover it with cork tiles. Then you can go to work filling the space with:

  • the best and the latest artwork,
  • family rules,
  • reminders and appointments
  • and best of all, photos.

Why not get hold of snapshots of your kids playing really nicely together and looking happy? What a great reminder of what a lovely feeling it is when everyone gets on. Get your kids to take photos of you (when they are old enough...) and display their work for all to see.

The best bit is that things can go up, come down and get changed around whenever you feel like it, without damaging the paintwork or leaving messy tape marks.

Now, I have yet to practice what I preach. We are starting some building work soon and have our space set aside. It may take some time to get there, but I am really looking forward to having our own place for photos and the like. My parents were never in to displaying pictures and I guess that we haven't been too good, either. But I do know how nice it is to see that someone cares enough to put a photo of you up on their wall. If I am aware of feeling that, then I am sure that my children are, too. My little girl loves seeing pictures of herself and her brother, so we are going for a whole wall of it!

I will post a picture when we finally get there (though don't hold your breath - it might be January next year!)

Great Idea...
I have a pin board of all my family back in Australia so that the kids know who Nana, Grandpapa and Aunty Billie and Uncle Chris are and f course other family members... I am slowly getting a collection of photos of the kids to hang up as well. The question is where to put it...  My walls are pretty full already... :) I think we'll have to build an extention...

we to have plans
Great idea. We too have plans for a family photo wall. We only moved in in March and it is still just a plan. There is so much to do when you first move in. My husband's family lives in New Zealand so I think it is especially important to have their photos up as we don't get to see them that much. The child's art wall is still a way down the track as baby is not due until December.

Great idea!
Actually, that is my plan to do soon. I have an area in the basement that hosts my little girls pictures that she brings home from nursery school. i love her artwork. i just can't throw anything away of hers. My plan was to put together a large cork board area for all of the children's art work. My boys are still pretty young. Right now, its all Cydney's masterpieces!!! Photos are a great idea also!

Creative idea
That's a fun idea! I think I may do something like this in my daughters room so she can put up all her work and her achievments (good test scores, awards, etc) so we all can celebrate her!

Build a "Family Wall"

Great idea..... ours is the fridge but there is always to much and not enough room, my kids are always so proud of their work and yes my photos always end up in a box waiting to be put in an album, or stored on the computer.  So thanks for this advice, I think I will make it my next project!!!

Build a
Ours is every door that isnt used!  Such as the hall cupboard and the hot water cupboard door as well as the 'front' of the kitchen and lounge doors.  A wall is probably a tidier way to do it because it is contained in one place then.  When we get a proper house I think I will dot hat idea.  For now these little patches of colour make this place bearable.
Peace
