And you thought that those Homework years were behind you !!!!
Sorry but NO
As long as you have children at school
You have to play your part in getting the Homework accomplished
Our children, don't think like us.........
They really believe the teachers will listen when they say "The Dog Ate it !!!!"
I've noticed that my boys seem to get a lot more homework than I can remember getting!!!
Maybe its a sign of the computer age. It seems that all homework needs access to a computer nowadays
I found left to their own devices my children would always be getting assignments set one day and be instructed of a deadline a week later, in my childrens eyes they would interpret this as........"Nothing urgent I can do it next week!!!!" .........
Well, we all know how that story ends.................a late night of panic the day before the project is due in..........
My boys have school homework diaries, so there is no excuse for me to not keep on top of things.
I believe its my responsibility as a parent, to check their homework diaries each evening, make sure that the work that can be done that evening is done, Even if they have a week to do it, its better that they at least start on it right away. If its work of a more practical nature and there are elements they need me to get hold of, I can write it down right away, so no excuse for me to forget.
I came to an agreement with my boys about the timing of homework. I know some prefer to get their child to do their homework done immediately after school, before tea so they have the evenings free. This doesn't work for my family, my boys come home from school and homework is the last thing on their agenda, so instead we agree they are free after school to play/chill/socialise until teatime, then after tea its homework. Their bedtime will never be put back because of homework, they understand this, so they are more than happy to spend time after tea getting their homework done leaving them time for themselves again before its bedtime.
Its advisable to check their homework requirements. Sometimes they may misunderstand what is expected of them, just a simple re through of the instructions by a parent could make all the difference between a merit or a detention !!!!
Give the child an area to do their homework without distractions. If you have no private area they can use, then as long as they can concentrate somewhere. This may mean the TV goes off for the whole family, but the bonus is that the child will work better and you don't spend the evening shouting at them to get on with their homework !!!!
Ultimately, you aren NOT going to find many children that enjoy doing their homework, all we can do as parents is to encourage them to respect that the more effort they put into achieving their targets whilst they are young, then the easier it will be to reach their goals when they are older.
