Always buying clothing and toys etc for your children?

FremantleDocker by FremantleDocker Talking Back(October 2008) (rank 51st)

Are you forever buying clothing, toys, books, educational things for your children, but don't always have the money to buy all these at once, and can't always do layby's? Well i'm here to hopefully put away those miserable times, and to help you out with a few hints, and i've

also done a few of these things in the past.

I've always in the past taken my children's clothing to the local op shop, and bought clothing there for the children also. Then there was one day i was in there and over heard this woman saying that she is always struggling to buy clothing all the time and to buy what i mentioned earlier. She was with someone who i found out to be her cousin.

I made a suggestion that we all gather up as many people as we can and meet at the local park one weekend for a picnic, and before this day, that everyone sorts out what their child doesn't need anymore like either grown out of the clothing, or too old for toys, books etc, and bring these items with them, and what we do, is put everything in the middle, and let everyone pick and choose what they want to take home with them, and it's all free.

What ever is left over, goes to an op shop. I have done this so many times, that i've saved packet loads of money. We did this like once every 2 to 3 months and everyone thought it was a fantastic idea. More people came every time, and this woman was happy and found it very usefull.

Also what you can do, is find a local op shop aswell as they usually sell childrens clothing for really cheap, and if you go in there regularly, they usually give you discounts or add a few extra things in the shop for you for free.

Give this a go. Op Shops are great, and need your support.

Re: Always buying clothing and toys etc for your children?

with Aaron I always went to op shops to buy his clothes kids grow to quick, with Katelyn my sister is my op shop I have only had to buy 2 jump suits in 6 months the best sis has given me the rest.

also on that, talking to sis today she has loads of kids toys that she wanted to give away so she talked to her health centre sister about it and is going to donate her kids toys to a family that is short of cash for xmas, another good idea remember there is always someone worse off than you!

I love op shops also. It's great when you have older brothers or sisters to give you hand me downs. Saves us alot of money etc.

That is so wonderful what your sister is doing. I admire and fully respect your sister for what she's doing.

Yeah, i know there are alot worse of people than me, thats why i try to give to the op shops as much as i give and things like that.

Re: Always buying clothing and toys etc for your children?

There are only a few thing i buy brand new any more. Most clothes i get at op shops, I also get books, toys, kitchenware, tupperware, You can buy plates and cutlery for 10cents each so why would you buy it brand new? Actually I go a bit over the top sometimes and end up with too much stuff thats hard to part with. So I sell it on ebay if it starts getting too cluttered (then I buy more)

And I also think its good to give back a bit of what you get.

Great idea about the trading picnic.

I think you can never have too much of anything. It's better to have more than not enough. Ebay is great for selling things.

Exactly right, about it's good to give back of what you get, thats why i give the op shops no less than 5 bags full of clothing etc.

Kerri.

Re: Always buying clothing and toys etc for your children?

Good thinking Kerri, love your articles. You seem to get into the same sort of stuff as me ie op shops, searching high and low for cheapest groceries, etc! - maybe its a parent thing, there just isn't much money that still has to go round a lot of expenses...

Love the idea of the swap meet, might try to get some interested parents from the school into it - it sounds a lot easier than the old garage sale trick...!!

Yeah!!!!!! for Op shops...I love them but have not done it for a while as I can not see myself in one with 3 little ones - they would tear the place apart thinking it was a fun new play centre...grrr....

But whenever I have the opportunity this is where I shop, why pay full price for clothes that they are going to be in for 2 to 3 months and get filthy all the time...Second hand is not only cheaper but better and kinder to the enviroment... I love passing on (what is still worth passing on) to my friends....

Great article thanks for writing it...

Glad you also love op shops. Didn't realise so many people used them like i do. Exactly right and i agree with you there. I try not to pay full price and they only do stay in them for only a few months. Thats why i love op shops also.

I'm glad you love my article.

GOod to hear that you do this also. Yeah, i understand where you're coming from where it is hard for you when you always buy the clothing and no one passes them onto you.

That's awesome about the black bags. Excellent.

Re: Always buying clothing and toys etc for your children?

I am a big fan of op shops, garage sales and our reviva centre (at the tip) where we have picked up amazing outdoor toys, indoor toys, books and clothes.  By far the best for us lately has been our preschool doing a similar thing - they sold donated clothes (from preschool families) and the money went back to the school but as all the items were only a few dollars, it was great!  I picked up clothes for $1, $2 and very good ones for $3.  Great!

Re: Always buying clothing and toys etc for your children?

Hi kseers.

That's a great idea what the kindergarten did. I might suggest this at the school my daughter goes to now. She's only started school in April, and they're always looking for ideas to raise money for the school, so i might suggest if people donate things to the school and have a huge sale on at the school on the weekend and have a few rides etc there aswell. That's a; great idea.

I also love op shops and garage sales.

Great idea. I've been shopping at op shops since I was a teen and never hesitate to get the kids clothes there when I can. I've found massive bargains.

Hi Janice.

Thanks for the great feedback. Exactly right, clothes are getting really expensive in the big store names, and i find this to be the cheap and easy way of thing.
