Indoor Cubbies
You Will Need
1 Old Single bed cotton sheet (Dbl is good, but any size will do),
(plain and a light colour)
Laundry or permanent Texta
Table or Flat floor space
Scissors
Imagination or picture to copy
Time 1 hour minimum Can carry
over for a few days for older children.
Lie your sheet flat across you surface, (table or floor) start by making a rectangular roof, this is simply free hand drawing a large table top sized rectangle,
(If you know what you will be hanging it over, ie. a card table (for a small cubby) centre the sheet on the table and draw around it's edges.)you may like to draw on a nice brick chimney or shingles for effect.
Push the sheet across the surface so you are now faced with a long edge. Draw 2 lines from the roof/rectangle corners down to the edge of the sheet. This is a wall. You may like to have a front door here with a nice window. Drawing in a door frame, the door with door handle, a window sill with a flower box, a cross in the window depicting the window panes and perhaps some pulled back curtains. Repeat this process using your imagination until you have detailed your 4 walls.
You then want to cut up both sides of your door or doors ( the bottom should be the base of the sheet anyway.), so that it makes a flap. Cut out the some of the pains of your windows, leaving some solid. Within the solid ones you may wish to add inner house details such as a fire place burning on a far wall, a picture hanging, portion of a table or lounge chair for example, it is completely up to you.
Your cubby house may be complete to hang over a table or tall backed chairs. Of course the larger the sheet the larger the cubby, if you have more than 1 child you may wish to use a Queen or King sized sheet. Try an op-shop as they often have very cheap linen perfect for this kind of project.
You can also have your little helpers colour it in, this would be best done prior to cutting, as it will move around less. I would suggest using Texta’s as paint will be a bit messy and take a long time to dry. Also if you have a better chance of the Texta’s not running or washing out, should your cubby need a bit of a clean up from time to time. Beats renovating have fun! If you do choose to colour in with Texta’s I suggest you go over the finished cubby with a hot iron, as this will set the colours better.
Extra Hints
Permanant Markers come in all Primary Colours and have thick tips for easier colouring. If colouring always lay an art sheet or newspaper under the project to prevent paint or markers transferring through as they can be VERY hard to remove from your hard wood floor or baltic pine dining table.
You may try saving your cardboard food box’s eg. Cereal (sp) boxes, egg cartons, Milk Cartons, and making a corner store instead of a house. This could promote, more educational play such as counting, with change/money , people skills etc.
You can make an old fashioned style class room, a Nursery Rhyme house for example the Gingerbread House from Hansel and Gretal, a Castle, find a nicely illustrated children’s book and prepare to be inspired.
Keep set up in a corner, and put some dress ups in there. When it is no longer being used very often, fold it up and put away.
Recycling toys on a monthly basis is a great way to keep little imaginations working well and saves you money as you can pull out the toys that have had a month off and they will be exciting all over again.
