Ultrasounds During Pregnancy

Alaksuleiel by Alaksuleiel Speaking(October 2008) (rank 149th)

My experience with Ultrasounds during pregnancy are that there are three 'normal' ones, (and any more are a bonus!)

One during early pregnancy before 12 weeks to give a due date, especially if you are unsure of the due date, these can come in very handy if you are

unsure of the date your last period cycle started.

One at 11-13 weeks but no later than 13 weeks to check the lngth of the 'nuchal oedema on the neck of the foetus. This is to give a more accurate idea of whether the foetus is at greater risk of Downs Syndrome or similar conditions.  http://www.nevdgp.org.au/info/melb_us/11_13weekscan.htm for more information.

One at 18 weeks to check the progress of the foetus and gve the hospital an idea of the child's size and this one can also tell you to a 97% succes rate what the sex of the baby might be!

During my last pregnancy I had an ultrasound a week for the last 9 weeks of my pregnancy to check the amount of amniotic fluids surrounding the baby, this is normal procedure for women with gestational diabetes, gave me a chance once a week to say hello to my unborn daughter and I felt closer to her because of this.

The Point to this piece of advice is: if you only have two ultrasounds this is completely normal, if you have more than two, this is completely normal too! I only had two all up for my first pregnancy, one at 15 weeks and one at 18 weeks, and yet I had about 13 for my second pregnancy. I am on my third, so who knows how many I'll have?

I had lots of ultrasounds to check the amount of fluid surrounding the baby as he was two weeks over due. I had also a 3D ultrasound which was a great and excited. I saw my baby's details and heard his heart beats.

Re: Ultrasounds During Pregnancy

I only had what I would call 2 normal ones.
I had one at 14 weeks because they couldnt find a heart beat with the monitor. I then had another one at 18 weeks to check the progress.

From there I had one at 19 weeks because of an abnormality in my sons heart, another one at 32 weeks to check the progress of the heart and a 3D/4D one at 35 weeks.

Since being born my son has had 1 dont on him also.
