I AM WRITING THIS ADVICE DUE TO A POST IN THE Q&A SECTION THAT I REPLIED TO, ABOUT A MUM WHO GAVE HER SON MILK IN A BOTTLE AT BED TIME, AND SAYS IT RESULTED IN BLACKENING OR DECAYING TEETH, AND HOW HER SON DOESNT LIKE REGULAR MINT TOOTH PASTE... IT MADE ME THINK OF MY OWN EXPERIENCES AND I WANTED TO SHARE THAT WITH YOU ALL.....
My sister had a sad situation with her daughter who is now 4 years old, she continually let her have fruit juice or milk in a bottle all day long and for bed, thinking it was healthy.
The end result was badly decayed teeth which caused alot of pain for my neice and had to be removed thru westmead hospital, the child was distraught at this painful operation (yes, they had to admit her to hospital and knock her out to fix this!), though my sister is more careful with her new baby and wont make the same mistake again, this doesnt stop my neice going to kindergarten next year with quite a few teeth missing and kids can be cruel, nor has it taken away the memory of the pain she went thru due to the decaying teeth she had, just a small knock to certain areas of her mouh/teeth would cause bleeding and tears, and eating was a challenge as was brushing her teeth and then there was general tooth aches and pain.
Appearance is only a quick judgement and thought away to some people, and as i said, kids can be cruel... She was teased at preschool for having "yucky black teeth" and may now get teased in kindergarten too, and i suppose alot of adults would have passed judgement on my sister for letting it happen or for it getting as far as it did.
Alot of mums think 100% fruit juice or so called 'healthy' drinks wont do damage, but they do!. Fruit juice has its own natural sugars. Continual bottles of juice etc are not appropriate at bed time (or during the day either for that matter!), what i am trying to say is that there must be a limit to the ammounts we let our kids consume, as just because the label of a product says '100% fruit juice, healthy, no added sugar etc etc etc' it doesnt mean its safe for continual over usage.
My neice hated brushing her teeth due to the pain, and we encouraged her thru using flavoured toothpaste, in yummy flavours like strawberry etc - try looking it up on a search engine like yahoo australia, it may be the solution to getting your child to brush their teeth willingly, and please please PLEASE remember that kids need regular check ups too so find a good dentist which your child is comfortable with or make a appointment with the local hospital dental clinic.
Goodluck!.
