STAPLES OR STITCHES AFTER CAESAREAN

Anonymous Author (October 2008)

MY FIRST CHILD WAS BORN NATURALLY AFTER BEING INDUCED AS HE WAS 2 WEEKS OVERDUE.

THEN MY SECOND CHILD WAS SUPPOSED TO BE NATURAL ALSO BUT WHILST IN LABOUR HIS HEART RATE KEPT DROPPING AND RISING SO IT WAS DECIDED ON A CAESAR.

MY CUT WAS STITCHED  AND

THERE WE WERE WITH OUR PRECIOUS BABY 2 DAYS LATER READY TO GO HOME AND UPON DOING FINAL CHECK-UPS BEFORE RELEASING ME I TOLD THE DOCTOR THAT THE CUT WAS STINGING HE CHECKED IT AND SAID IT WAS A LITTLE SWOLLEN AND RED BUT NOT TO WORRY.

THE NEXT DAY THE COMMUNITY NURSE CAME TO CHECK UP ON ME AND AGAIN I SHOWED HER AND IT WAS REDDER AND REALLY STARTING TO HURT, SHE TOLD ME TO PUT SOME COOL GEL PACKS ON IT AND IT WOULD BE OK. I THOUGH IT MUST HAVE BEEN NORMAL FOR IT TO BE LIKE THIS AS I HAD NOT HAD A CAESAR BEFORE. A WEEK LATER THE NURSE CAME BACK TO TAKE THE STITCHES OUT IT HURT SO MUCH SHE THEN TOLD ME TO GO TO MY GP AS I MAY HAVE A SLIGHT INFECTION. I DID THIS AND AM TOLD BY MY GP THAT I SHOULD HAVE GONE BACK TO THE HOSPITAL AFTER 3 DAYS INSTEAD OF LEAVING IT FOR A WEEK, I EXPLAINED THAT I HAD BEEN TOLD IT "IT WOULD BE OK" HE WAS HORRIFIED AND IMMEDIATELY PUT ME ON SOME STRONG ANTIBIOTICS TO LEAR UP A SEVERE INFECTION.

2 DAYS LATER THE SWELLING WAS NOT GETTING ANY SMALLER, AS I WENT TO SIT INTO AN ARM CHAIR THIS ALMIGHTY POP LIKE A BALLOON SOUNDED AND I WAS LEFT NOT SITTING AND NOT STANDING WITH A WARM WET GUSH DOWN MY PELVIS AND LEGS. I SCREAMED REALISING THAT MY ENTIRE CUT HAD JUST BURST OPEN. MY PARTNER CAREFULLY GUIDED ME TO THE CAR WITH NUMEROUS TOWELS OVER MY STOMACH AND TOOK ME TO EMERGENCY. AS THIS WAS MY FIRST CAESAR ALL I THOUGHT WAS THAT ALL MY GUTS AND EVERYTHING WAS GOING TO JUST FALL OUT ON THE FLOOR . AFTER ARRIVING AT THE HOSPITAL AND WAITING 6 HOURS,( I THOUGHT I WAS BLEEDING TO DEATH) AND 6 BLOOD SOAKED TOWELS I WAS FINALLY SEEN ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT MOST OF THE INFECTION HAD COME OUT WHEN I BURST AND TO KEEP TAKING THE ANTIBIOTICS. I WAS TOLD THAT I HAD RECEIVED THE INFECTION FROM THE STITCHING MATERIAL USED.I WAS THEN PACKED IN THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE CUT WITH WADDING AND TOLD I WOULD HAVE TO HEAL NATURALLY FROM THE INSIDE OUT AND TO CHANGE THE WADDING DAILY. IT TOOK 9 MONTHS FOR MY SCAR TO BE HEALED COMPLETELY EVEN THOUGH IT WASN'T A NICE NEAT SCAR.

ON THE PREMATURE BIRTH OF MY NEXT SON I AGAIN HAD A CAESAR AND THEY CUT OUT ALL THE SCAR TISSUE FROM THE LONG HEALING OF THE FIRST CEASAR, THEY STAPLED ME INSTEAD OF STITCHING A WEEK LATER WHEN THE STAPLES WERE  REMOVED I HAD AN IMMACULATE STRAIGHT LINE SCAR WITH NO  LUMPS OR BUMPS.

SINCE THEN I HAVE HAD ANOTHER 2 CAESAREANS  BOTH USING STAPLES AND HAVE HAD NO PROBLEM AT ALL

I KNOW EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT BUT I WOULD ADVISE ANYONE I KNOW TO ASK FOR STAPLES AND NOT STITCHES AS IT RUINED ME AND TOOK SO LONG TO HEAL - PERHAPS I WAS JUST UNLUCKY

Re: STAPLES OR STITCHES AFTER CAESAREAN

Hi there,

I've had three C-sections and I would have to say that I prefer stitches, luckily for me I have always been given disolverable ones . . After my 1st c-section I had staples and as I read you story I was amazing at how alike our stories are, only difference was that you had stitches and I hap staples. Also my GP whom is also a surgeon sowed me back up after the hospital refused too . .

Thanks so much for sharing your story . . .

Cheers Kellz

Re: STAPLES OR STITCHES AFTER CAESAREAN

I have had 2 ceasers the last one been just under a year ago and i had the choice as to weather i wanted stitches or staples. I went for staples both times and didn't have any problems with the healing process. Thanks for sharing your story

Re: STAPLES OR STITCHES AFTER CAESAREAN

I had a cesarean with my last child and had the staples and i was like you where i had them out a week or 2 later and took roughly 6 weeks to move properly and my scar eventually faded and was back to normal like i said in about 6 weeks, but being able to go back to 100 % was about 3 months, and never have done anything different

Re: STAPLES OR STITCHES AFTER CAESAREAN

i had 2 emergency c-sections and i had the stitches, my first 1 was the 1 they had totake out and that was fine, my 2nd 1 was dissolvable 1and that was fine too.

So i am sorry for what you went through, but everyone heals different and it may depend on the doctors at the time.

But i am very sorry to hear about that.

Now I am scared!   I am recovering from an emergency c-section 3 weeks ago and didn;it get  choice.  I have the dissolvable stitches, but have developed a staff infection and am on strong antibiotics.  Hopefully I will have a much better ending to my story than you did!

Re: STAPLES OR STITCHES AFTER CAESAREAN

Thanks for sharing your exprience. I cant beleieve the hospital and nurse didnt look into your pain further to prevent further infection. My mum has had 3 caesars and she said she healed better with the staples but the staples hurt more when coming out whereas the stitches just dissolved. Im glad your ok now and your 2nd caesar went much better.
