Advice on looking after your self during pregnancy

surfybabe123 by surfybabe123 Standing(October 2008) (rank 500+)

So i went to my midwives appointment the other day and im currently 25 weeks pregnant. To my suprise she gave me this information on how to look after my self during pregnancy. I asked her why i had to have it and she said that every time a
under 20's pregnant female comes in to a appointment now they have to give this card out to them. I did find it interesting but a little rude to be handing this to me now that im so far along. But anyways its useful information for any pregnant woman         Being Pregnant

Being pregnant changes your body's needs and it is important to look after those needs. Pregnancy may also affect how you are feeling. You may have times when you feel really good and other times when you don't feel so good. It is a good idea to have someone you trust who you can talk to during your pregnancy.

When you first find out you are pregnant it is a good idea to find a doctor you are comfortable with. It is recommended you stay with the same doctor throughout your pregnancy. During the pregnancy your doctor can be very helpful in ensuring that you have a safe pregnancy. Your doctor is able to talk with you about the stages of your pregnancy and what you can be doing to keep you and your baby healthy. They can also provide you with options for having the baby. Check out the Finding Help Section for more information about your local doctor.

Suggestions for Looking After Yourself

To look after yourself during pregnancy there is a whole lot of things you may wish to consider.

Diet - What you need to eat changes when you are pregnant. Your body needs extra nutrients to help you and your baby stay healthy. Your doctor or a dietician are two people that may be helpful for you to talk to about what is good to eat during pregnancy.

Exercise - Exercising while you are pregnant may also be helpful for reducing stress and relieving back pain. Going for a light swim or walk are two options. Take care if you are exercising not to over do it. Speaking with your doctor or a fitness instructor may be helpful in working out what level of exercise is right for you.

Drugs and Alcohol - It is recommended that when you are pregnant that you don't take drugs or alcohol. Taking drugs or alcohol may not be safe for your baby. Your doctor can give you more information about pregnancy and the affects of drugs and alcohol.

Talking to a Female you Trust - Being pregnant is a unique experience. However, there are some things that happen to everyone. It may be helpful to have a female you can trust and who has been pregnant to share your experience with. This person may be your mum, sister, grandmother, aunt or a friend.

Re: Advice on looking after your self during pregnancy

I was 17 when i fell pregnant, 18 when i had my son, he is now 3months old. I was never handed out this card?? I was so lucky to only ever see 1 rude midwife. I have since been back to hospital with my son a  few times and seen the same midwifes and the nurses whow ere in the maternity ward when i had Ashton and they are all happy with hoe well i done and how much of a great job im doing. The health nurse tells me everytime i see her how great im doing and it really feels good to be told that when everyone else looks down on you becasue your young.

I ate alot of junk while i was pregnant, but i ate heaps of fruit too, i also went off meat, it just stank for some reason. I didnt excersise but i did keep a good weight. I put on 25kgs when iw as pregnant but i didnt look huge, now im already abck to 50kg from pushing a pram everywhere. I spoke to my sister and mum alot during my pregnancy , it definetly does help to have a female who has been through it to talk too, i also think its important to have someone to talko after your baby has arrived, the 1st few weeks are hard and someone to talk to other then your partner is really nice.
