Starting a food diary for your hyperactive child.

Juzzy by Juzzy Speaking(October 2008) (rank 178th)

My son is 3 and has always been on the go. Crawling at 5 months, walking unaided at 10 months. He never slept, at most when he was a new born he would sleep for about 20 minutes during the day. Even now i could count on one hand how

many times he has slept through the night.

When i was pregnant with Joshua my doctor told me that he would probably have the same allergies to food colouring that i do. If i have green food colouring i get very hyperactive to the point where i don't know what i am doing. (i describe it like being very drunk without drinking alcohol)

So we have been very careful with everything that we have ever fed Joshua. He has never had any cordial of any sort and has never had green food colouring until a few weeks ago when he was given some cake that was covered in green icing while at childcare. To say the least the poor child went NUTS!!!!!!! It took two days to get our son back to normal.

We started thinking about all the artifical colours and preservatives that are in foods and whether they were are factor in Joshua's behaviour. Don't get me wrong, Joshua isn't a naughty boy. He is just on the go, sometimes he doesn't think before he does something and sometimes he thinks that it is ok to ride his 11 month old sister like a horse. So we decided to start a food diary for Joshua. Everyday we would write down everything he ate and what his behaviour was like. To make it easier to understand we ruled 2 columns into an exercise book and had 3 sections. One for morning, one for afternoon and one for dinner. The rest of the page was left for an overall view of the day. Each morning, afternoon and dinner we also wrote what his behaviour was like in the other column. We found by writing in a food diary Joshua ate less as he wasn't snacking during the day so he wasn't getting all the easy packaged stuff like chips, chocolate and muslie bars.

Once we started the diary we also removed artifical colours and preservatives out of Joshua's diet. By day 3 we found a complete change in Joshua's behaviour, we actually thought he was getting sick because he was so quiet and calm. By day 5 we noticed Joshua was sleeping better, waking up happier and playing with one toy for longer.

We are currently on day 8 of the diary and Joshua is a different child, not in a bad way. He is so much more loving and has even stopped riding his sister like a horse. He now knows when to stop and he is eating much better. We have noticed in the last week how much Joshua loves fruit. We would always offer him fruit before but with everything else that was on offer the fruit usually stayed in the fruit bowl.

I wouldn't say that removing artifical colours and preservatives has really been that hard, sure it takes longer at the moment to do the shopping because we have to read all the packaging but we have found some treats that Joshua really loves. Wiggles ABC or 123 biscuits. They are available from most supermarkets, they are simular to tiny teddies and they come in packs of 10. The best thing about them is the price, about $3.00

I am never going to go back and feed my children artifical colours and preservatives. I'm sure there are going to be times when i am not going to be able to stop them eating this food (when they go to parties) but while i can i will teach them the importance of these types of foods as being 'sometimes' foods.

Re: Starting a food diary for your hyperactive child.

Thanks Juzzy, i'm gonna start one see what happens, I wouldn't be suprised if Lachie is having an allergic reaction to them if thats how you describe it. my angel has anaphylatic allergies to peanuts and chickpeas, so a behaviour reaction kinda makes sense. My sil's son had the same problem. I want to solve it without medicating him.

Great article too!

Cheers Raven

Thanks for reading Raven,

I hope you can work out what it is that is setting Lachie off. I hate it when Josh has had anything that sends him nuts. He is just impossible to reason with.

I really hope the diary works and you find out what it is. keep me updated.

Re: Starting a food diary for your hyperactive child.

Wow, fantastic advice. As you know by my recent Q, I have just started a food dairy today but I never thought to record his behaviour either. I have not cut out all colours and preservatives because I know on the occasions that he will have them they will drive him nuts (and me to pull my hair out) so I have cut them down, but usually his diet is pretty healthy as to what he has on offer. Ie yoghurts, fruit, cereal etc. He is a very energetic boy and was walking unaided at 10 months as well but he is super strong and we saw a paerfect example the other day when he carried a shopping basket through the shops with 4lt of milk and a few other small items. he can sit focused at something for reasoable amounts of time, but has no concept of consequences either. Hopefully sorting out his deit will help.

Cheers again for sharing you experience.

Re: Starting a food diary for your hyperactive child.

Thanks for reading this. I hope it will help you out.

It is amazing that when i am reading your blogs and everything you write about your little man i am sitting there nodding my head because Josh is exactly like your boy. The way they act, the fact that Josh will also try and carry 4 litres of milk through a shopping centre right down to the struggles we have with food.

Hopefully you will be able to sort out all his food issues. We always know once one problem is sorted out another one will rear it's ugly head.

Re: Starting a food diary for your hyperactive child.

Thank you so much for this advice. My daughter is 2 1/2 and she is very hyeractive and doesn't listen to much or she is too rough with her little brother, Everyone says it is the terrible twos but I always thought it could be something more. I am getting her tested for food allergies and I am also going to try the food diary and see if it helps. Fingers crossed she will settle down with a little trial and error

Thanks Naomi,

The food diary really did work! Josh is just a little angel now. We did find that with the food diary, that chocolate sends him nuts so now we have to hide it better.

Hi,

Thanks for a GREAT article . . Food diaries are a must for any parent who is dealing with food allergies etc as these help so much in detecting an problem foods . . I would be lost if I didn't use one for S2.

Thanks Kellz,

Since starting the diary we have found that chocolate really sets him off so that is something that we sadly have to get out of the house (or just hide it better).

Re: Starting a food diary for your hyperactive child.

Well done, Juzzy. Well written, clear, thorough and to the point. Just a comment to bulatassy - there is a naturall yoccurring chemical called Salicylate, found in certain fruits and vegetables, that can have a similar effect as preservatives and colourings. Not sure what the full list is but I know that apples are also on it - a check of ADD and diet/allergy sites would give the list.

Re: Starting a food diary for your hyperactive child.

I have a son who will be 17 in nov and i went thru a similar experience with him when he was about 3 1/2, he also was always on the go But he would get aggressive towards me. we were living in fiji at the time and our Dr who was Australian told me she thought he was ADD and needed to go onto drugs to settle him. Well i was horrified at the thought! The best thing she did was give me a name of a woman who was qualified to deal  with kids withADD,  and after we had blood tests done on him we met this woman.

She asked me lots of questions and one thing she wanted me to do was keep a diary on his behaviour and food intake for about a month.

well that was the best thing we ever did like you after a week it  may have been sooner but he was a different child, sleeping at the same time each night and sleeping all night....he too was attentive to others and best of all I could talk to my son without all the agression.

we took away all the chocolate, sweets etc but found with Josefa that Oranges were the one thing that set him off. weird but true!

I think so many DR are quick to judge our kids and put them on drugs to quieten them down, I had never heard of ADD back then and i was terrified. But thru a simple plan and diary we got to enjoy our beautifull boy.

Thanks for posting the advice I hope if there are parents out there who are having a hard time with their children read this and try for themselves how effective a food diary can be.

Re: Starting a food diary for your hyperactive child.

Hi,

Thanks for commenting. We too have found chocolate to be a huge problem. He hasn't had any chocolate since we began the diary, even though he loves the stuff.

Glad to hear that a food diary worked for your son as well
