Headlice - Nitty gritty Comb.

emmie by emmie Talking Back(October 2008) (rank 26th)

I have found the most amazing way t o get rid of my childrens head lice . The last 6 months i have been using the nitty gritty comb on my kids hair i dont like to use chemical on them . I was a bit worried at firsst as

i didnt like the thougyt of puttting it through their heads i was worriedi would cut their scalps. The comb is very close together and has a weird pattern on the teeth and the teeth are rotated with a thivk and a thin tooth. and very very close together.

Thing with this comb is it gets absolutly everything out unlike all the headlice solutions not only dies it remove the headlice but the live eggs and the dead ones as well . My partner even uses it to get rid of his dandruff.

If you also buy some headlice repellant from the chemist and just spraysome onbefore the y go to school headlice hate it.

You can buy the nitty gritty comb in most chemist now. You can also check it out here

Good luck with being headlice free.

Re: Headlice - Nitty gritty Comb.

This along with Teisha's solution worked great for us in the autumn. We now do a weekly comb with the Nitty Gritty Comb so we will catch them early if (when!) they come backagain. We had been doing this for a year (DH's task) plus spraying with water + conditioner + tea tree oil every time we brushed for a year (my task), and guess what, when we missed it out for a few weeks (both thought the other one was still doing their job), that's when she got them! Circumstantial evidence that the combo works!

Re: Headlice - Nitty gritty Comb.

Hello, I hadn't heard of this comb, so I checked it out, and here are the patented steel teeth... I see you can also get an aromatherapy solution to aid removal, and a spritz as well.  I will keep an eye out for an Australian stockist and keep one on hand - thanks for the heads up.

We had one infestation, and we used a couple of ordinary fine tooth combs, and I found them slow and frustrating.  We also used the recipe for conditioner and spray that Teshia suggested in her advice a while back; I think these will make a good combo if we get caught out again.  Thanks Emz - Cheers, Lui ; )

Re: Headlice - Nitty gritty Comb.

Hi Emz,

Thanks for this as there are so many mums that struggle with the removal h=off the eggs . .  I have found that white vinegar is great for remvong the glue that hold the egg to the hair and then it just a matter of combing through .  . I will have to see if this is available here in Australia . .

We have been nit free for over 12 months but you never know what is around the corner . .

cheers Kellz

Re: Headlice - Nitty gritty Comb.

I use a electric comb that looks like this

and comes with all this

  • removable lice comb with Microtines
  • unique sweeping action over comb surface
  • removable gel compartment
  • non invasive / non chemical
  • no electric current
  • inert non toxic gel, non allergenic
  • easy to clean
  • reusable, durable, compact kit
  • easy to grip ergonomic shape
  • AA 1.5v alkaline battery powered motor

And with this there is no need for chemical, and no pulling of the hair as a normal nit comb does with my girls hair, we have being lucky to keep lice at bay..

and i also use loads of coniditioner as well and Hair lacquor recommended highly by a good friend and hair dresser...

But great that your girls have the type of hair that can handle one of those combs u mentioned..

Re: Headlice - Nitty gritty Comb.

Well each to their own Cazza just what works for us. I dont like the electric combs we had a robi comb before and it pulled the hell outta my hair and kept buzzing from tangled hair cos it dont go through the haor howeve much conditionor you put on it and there is no way i was putting ti through my girls hair when it was so much hassle on my hair and chloes hair is really thick so it would have been a pain in the bum with hers too . I gave it to my friend for her to use on her little boy . You dont need chemicals with the nitty gritty comb either so cant see where you are coming from there

Re: Headlice - Nitty gritty Comb.

Yes i found the Rombi comb pulled on my girls hair as well, but the one i pictured here is so diffrent to that...

I was meant to say some people would use Chemicals with the Nitty gritty combs,. but as u say everyone to their own, and you do what works for your own children..

Its just good to also see other options as well...

thanx

Re: Headlice - Nitty gritty Comb.

Its annoying isnt it ? Kylie brings them home from school then as we all have long hair we all get them. But i find nitty gritty combs are greati actually have 2 i lost one once and the same night i brought a new one i found the old one hah. I cant use chemicals on chloe as she has exzema and it has nasty stuff in it and if its used too much not only do they get immune to it but it breaks the hair . Hope it works for you xxxx
