WE all know our babies skin is supoosed to be beautiful like in the magazine (you know, the one we have all been secretly memorising throughout our pregnancies). but what about when it isnt? most babies get the little pimples on their cheeks, but there are other nasty skin problems,
such as mongolian spots. So what can we do to help and/or prevent these things from happening?
--Use colour anf fragrance free products--
These products contain chemicals that can upset your babies acid mantle. in the long run it can cause sensitivity and allergies. try to pick something as kind pure and gentle as possible, especially in the first few months when baby's skin is most fragile. check whether the product has ben approved by a peadeatrician or dermatologist.
--Bathing--
Baby only needs to be washed two or three times a week, or every other day. too much bathing can cause bubs skin to become dry and cracked.it is recommended that in the first few weeks, only use water as baby's skin is so delicate at this time.
I however, used johnsons baby bed time bath, and never had any problems, but i have been lucky with almost everything parenting so far :)
if the skin is dry it is best to use an oilbased gel or emolient based moisturiser after bathing. a perfect time for a baby massage! (see my other advice- why massage is good for baby) these moisturisers or gels provide an oil layer on the skin, preventing it form drying out.
--Shampooing--
SHampooing should be determined by the amount of hair and how oily it is. most babies can get away with the all in one kind, but some may need to use a mild shampoo.
If your baby suffers from cradle cap, soak his head or hair with baby oil (almod oil works as well) for as long as possible, preferably over night. then comb out with a baby brush. cradle cap is caused by baby's skin producing new cells quicker than the old ones fall off. if it is persistent or causing baby discomfort you should seek medical advice as soon as possible.
--changing--
use wipes that are fragrance free, kind to the skin and have added moisturiser. a barrier cream such as bepanthen is not needed 0unless there is 0some nappy rash or redness.
if you are ever in any doubt or concerned, see your doctor!
