Showering with Newborns

Blackcat by Blackcat Talking Back(August 2006) (rank 103rd)

When my first two children were born I bathed them in the baby bath like we were shown by the midwives and thought there was no other acceptable or safe way to bath them.  Then when my third child was born the midwife I had asked me if I had

ever showered with my other two children as newborns.  She said it was a wonderful way to bond with our baby.  So on day three when I went home from the hospital my husband showered himself while I undressed our baby and got him ready for the shower.  Then I would pass him to my husband in the shower and wait for them to finish.  Then I would take or son out of the shower, dry and dress him.  It was definatley a wonderful bonding experience for the both of them.  Our baby was always content and relaxed in the shower to the point where he would fall asleep with the water gently massaging his back.  It wasn't long before he could be put all the way under the water and have it go over his face without a fuss.  My husband and I totally believe that this has helped him (husband) have a much stronger bond with our son.  He always felt it hard to bond in the earlier days of our first two children with them all being breastfed.  This gave them their own close time with the all important skin on skin touch, much more bonding than being bathed with just one arm holding him.  It also came in handy when the weather turned cold knowing that the shower was always going to be the same temperature and not start to get cool.

He is now 18 months old and still loves to get in the shower with his dad and sit between dads feet and play in the bath.  Its one thing I wish we knew about at the beginning.

Will do this
Wow.  I wish we had a shower so i could do that with E.  She had showers all over the christmas while we were at my parents oplace and I am sure if we had a shower at home she would be a lot more confident with the waterfall effect of the shower over the head.  As it is she is still a little wary.  If I have another I intend to have a home with both shower and a bath, so shall certainly give this a go - sounds perfect for the bonding with daddy also.  That idea really appeals to me.
Peace

later on
I would think this would help get them used to the feel of the water so they aren't so fussy about bathing later on too!

It didn't work for us
I must be the only one with a woosey (chicken) husbend.  When I suggested he shower with his baby he almost ran out the door.  I got the baby undressed I got in the shower and had him pass her to me and I did it instead.  he was sooo nervous to even hold her (she was about 2 months, not a brand newy) to pass her to me when she was dry, he nearly had a fit when I passed her back wet.  Apart from that she has never liked anything on her eyes, clothes going over them getting dressed, or water even a splash, she is getting a lot better but back then you'd think she had got a lung full the way she spluttered and bucked around when some spray hit her eyes.  I guess you have to have all the participants eager to play the game.  It would have been nice.  I plan to try again soon as she can sit now I thought putting her little tub in with me so she can still have a splash (no longer too worried about splashes, just the occasional twinge) while I shower.

Umbilical cord stump?

I agree that showering with a baby is a great bonding experience.  My husband loves it it too. I just stand by ready to take my son off and get him dressed after he's done.

You said you did this when your baby was only days old? I was told not to fully wet baby until the umbilical cord stump has fallen off.

Umbilical cord stump?
Do you mean even to bath in the early days? I had to bath our three babies before we left the hospital while a midwife stood by and watched that we held them correctly and to help if it was needed.  Then they would show me how to dry the umbilical cord stump and to check it was healing ok.  So once we got home we could bath the baby daily if we wanted to.

We showered with our 3 kids to, I used to do the same, undress the baby and hand him to my husband, and yes they still love having a shower its hard to have a shower alone these days, as soon as they hear the water start they come running.
