Pant wetting after toilet training

Question:

My 4 year old daughter has just started wetting her pants for no reason. Im at my wits end.

My Advice:

How old was she when toilet training occured?

For a 4yo

to regress somewhat there will usually be a simple explanation -
-   You don't have a new baby do you?  If so, sometimes older ones will do this for attention as all of a sudden they aren't the baby anymore and that can be hard to let go of.
-   Have there been any changes at home like moving, upset in family, death of pet or loved one, change in sleep routine?
-   Does she go to kindy or pre-school?  Perhaps something is bothering her - bossy child, change of teachers, friend stopped going, change of routine.
-  Have your started work either part or full time?
-  If she is going to "big school" next year, perhaps she is a bit apprehensive?  Or if she has attended orientation, she may have come across a child she feels uncomfortable with?
-   If you don't think that's the case, then she may have a slight bladder infection. Or if she is complaining of a sore lower back at all then maybe minor kidney infection.

There is usually nothing to worry about, but defining what the cause is and working with it is the best thing to do.

Whatever the cause is, just remember to stay calm and not make her feel like she's doing anything wrong, and she will probably pass through it fairly quickly.

Re: Pant wetting after toilet training

HI there,

it is so good to know that I am not alone with this problem.  My daughter aged 43/4 started school in September her teacher went out sick with Swine flu and ever since she is wetting her pants every day.  I have tried everything, positive reinforcement (star charts) punishment, taking away treats, everything.  spoken to teachers everything.  I am being told she will grow out of it and dont worry!!!!!!

Don't worry too much, a lot of children wet when they start school, or a sudden change in a routine, it causes anxiety.

My own youngest is going through the same issues, there are also 12 others in a class of thirty who are doing the same. We all try to ignore the wetting, the teacher and assistants just change them as and when needed, and we all collectively reward them with a pompom in their jars when they goes to the toilet. Some are wetting up to four times a day initially, but that is now reducing to maybe two or three times a week. I know it is frustrating, but the more you make an issue of it, the longer the anxiety lasts and the longer the wetting continues.

Try to find a positive reward system and stick to it, this is not something that can be cured in a week. It will lessen off, in line with the return of your childs confidence and security. Our reward is gold medals(Plastic Acctually) one medal for every pompom jar filled. Once they get 15 medals they swap them for a little Silver Trophy (plastic, again) once they are dry for two straight weeks they are presented with a Gold Trophy, the kids are all really keen to get their Gold Trophy : )

Wishing you all the best. Winnie.xxxx

Maybe she's too interested in what she's doing at the time to go to the toilet, ask her regulary if she needs to go to the toilet and you take her there
