IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGE TO ALL PARENTS

griz by griz Walking(October 2008) (rank 335th)

This is a short and quick reminder to all parents of children who ride push bikes and skate-boards. Please remind your children to wear their safety helmets/stack hats.

Recently a local young member of our community was skate-boarding down a hill without a helmet. He crashed and hit his

head on the pavement. Twelve hours later he died in hostpital of critical head injuries. If only he wore his helmet. .

Please remind your kids to wear their helmet. Every time you see them, remind them.

I know it's easy when they are young and we are always supervising. Then the day will come when they are riding on their own with their mates and that's when they need to be reminded to wear their hat.

So please pass this message to your teenagers. Tell them to think of their mother before they take off their helmet. Think of their mother who gave birth to them, nursed them and watched them grow before deciding that they are too cool to wear a helmet. And think of their mother before they hop on a skateboard or a bmx just for a quick trick without wearing their helmet. Not only your mother, but your father, who has watched over proudly as you grew, your brothers, sisters and mates also.

It only takes one small, careless moment and many long year of pain and grief.

Re: IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGE TO ALL PARENTS

I never allow my son to ride on our street, with his mates, without his helmet. Even going into a parked car when playing chasey, on his bike, could end in tragedy.

Re: IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGE TO ALL PARENTS

Nice one griz. I got my 2 younguns into wearing helmets from a very young age - as a motorbike rider all my life I'm very strong on this - I've lost friends who were "too cool" for helmets.

When my littlies (now 6 & 7) were even younger they used to point out people riding pushies without helmets and sing out in their piercing kids' voices: "Look Daddy, he doesn't have a helmet!! He's Naughty!!". I used to cringe, especially when it was an adult they were pointing at who could easily hear them; then I thought, you know what, the kids are right and it won't hurt that person Any to hear it from a child - so now I just agree in just as loud a voice, and should the rider actually be carrying the helmet I also add how silly the rider is and that the helmet will do their heads no good in a crash unless its on their head!

Cheers - Eric

Re: IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGE TO ALL PARENTS

lol, keep spreading the message. You never know you may even save a life.

Yeah I know people who carry it in their backpack when they're on their pushy and just put it on if the cops are in town. Not much point really is it!

Re: IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGE TO ALL PARENTS

great advice I am going to show this to my 11 year old son when he comes home from school today. I have taken his skate board off him so many times I cant remember because he feels that he only has to wear his stack hat on his bike. I even went out and got him a skating stack hat?

Thanks again

Thank you for reading this. My hope is that when our children get older they will still wear their helmet/stack hat even when we are not around to insist upon it.

It is important, it doesn't matter where the person is, or what little trick they are doing, lives can change, or be lost in an instant.

Re: IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGE TO ALL PARENTS

Thank you for reading this. I do worry about older kids not wearing their stackhats, usually when their parents are not around.

I know for a fact that my older boys have taken their's off when riding into town, (as soon as they are out of mysight.).

This accident I referred to has really shaken them up, as this boy was their school captain. Since then they have actually been reminding me to wear mine! And they even insisted I buy them new better fitting helmets.

So I do think this  message is one of paramount importance.

Re: IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGE TO ALL PARENTS

Yes, it is what they get up to out of sight that is a worry... I bet I'd have taken mine off too.  It's a terrible way for them to get the message, perhaps he will leave a life-saving legacy for other boys his age; they all seem to think they are bullet proof.
