Yes, it is fine. Your body needs approx. twice the amount for a non pregnant, non breastfeeding woman. Vitamin A is only a problem when consumed in very, very high amounts which is when the liver has a hard time breaking it down.
With most vitamins and minerals, your body will rid itself of what it doesn't need. For example, if you consume to much iron, your poo will become black and harder to pass as the excess iron is excreted from the body (sorry to choose the gross example). The same goes for Vitamin A, unless you take the excessively high amounts. To 'overdose' on it, you would have to be taking about 20 a day, so 1 or even 2 (only on doctors recommendations) should not be a problem.
With any vitamin supplement, prescription or over the counter medications, it is important to take only the dosage recommended. it is also important that you are made aware of what is in the medication, what you can and can't do while taking the medication and what the possible side effects are (if any). Self medicating is not a safe practice, so always check with your gp and your pharmacist before taking anything new.
