Any vets around?

Was wondering if anyone has a bit of knowledge about kittens during pregnancy? We've had cats for years so am wondering if i would have most likey built an immunity to toxoplasmosis? We have a couple of kittens now, and am pregnant so my question is if  you have it in your system already is it not a problem with any new pets? Also is it possible to check if I have it in my system already anyway?

Thanks

I'm not a vet but, when it comes to pet I suggest Dr. Karen Becker. I visit her site and read her aritcles and it gives me lot of information. Here's her sires - http://www.mercolahealthypets.com/ I hope it could help you as well.

Re: Any vets around?

I have 5 cats currently, and ehilst in early stages of pregancy was litter training 4 kittens to house them, and in late pregancy, began litter training another four. I thoroughly washed my hands often, and used plastic bags for everything, so I wouldnt directly touch anything the kittens had done their business in or on. My daughter is fine, as I never caught anythign

Re: Any vets around?

I am a student vet nurse, the advice I offer may not be 100% correct and I still reccomend you check with your doctor, but my understanding of toxoplasmosis is that once you have caught the virus, you will have an immunity to it for life and won't affect future pregnancies, and having had cats long term, yes you probably have been exposed to it, a blood test should confirm if you have had it or not. The main concern is contracting it during a pregnancy as the baby could be effected rather severely and have physical/mental deformities, if it survives to term. The best way to avoid contracting it if you havent had it in the past, is to not handle the litter tray and if you must, use gloves and wash your hands and after handling kitties wash your hands as well.

Best of luck and hope all goes well.

Re: Any vets around?

I've had cats for years and kittens during pregnancy. Just make sure you wear gloves if you have to change litter trays, and be sure not to inhale any kitty litter dust while cleaning out trays, use disinfectant in and around trays daily and wash your hands thoroughly after touching the cats.

Toxoplasmosis can cause birth defects in unborn babies so it's very important to limit contact with the kitty litter if you can. If not then just use gloves and be OCD clean about it, thats what I did because my OH at the time wouldn't go near a litter tray to save his life. *sigh*

Good luck with bubs and kitties.

Re: Any vets around?

i completly understand your concern, i am the sole keeper of our cat, i have had her for about 5 years now, and have had to clean out her littler tray every week since that day, i'm 31 weeks preg with my second bub and haven't stopped cleaning it, i've had heaps of blood test and havent turned anything up, my midwife hasn't mentioned it and she has visited home several times so am hoping it all ok, will ask her when i see her and post the reponse

Re: Any vets around?

My doctor told me that if you've had cats before you got pregnant we most likely have an immunity to it.  I'm not sure if yo can be tested for it though, ask your doctor or maybe call the nurse??

I was told whilst pregnant, just wash hands after handling cats/kittens, and don't change the litter, get someone else to do it for the duration of your pregnancy.

Congrats and good luck
