son not interested in sucking his bottle

My son is 8 weeks old and is just not interested in sucking his bottle at all. He just wants it to sit in his mouth its like he doesn't want to work that hard for food. He is a big baby he weights 14 lbs. (he was 9, 7 at birth) and he normally eats 6 to 8 oz every 4 hours. Now he will barely eat and it is becoming a struggle to keep him fed. Any suggestions?

Re: son not interested in sucking his bottle

hi i had this problem with my baby too. he  had a high palate and would not attatch to breast or bottle. i had to syringe feed for the first two weeks. i eventually got him to latch on to the breast after a lot of effort. that didnt last long. eventually i found the only bottles he would suck from are those tommee tippee bottles that have the wideish teats. they look like a  breast. i think htyere called closer to nature. they r quiet expensive  though- bout $18 for two bottles

good luck!!!

Have a look at the flow of the teats you are using.  if they are too fast, then he won't, he'll just swallow as it gushes into his mouth.

If they are too slow, then he will struggle to get anything.

Aside from the feeding issues, is he an alert little boy?  Has plenty of energy etc?  if he is and does, then he might be going through a slow growth or maintenance growth period.  The first of these usually occur between 6 and 8 weeks.  If this is the case, then in the next couple of weeks, he should start wanting more at each feed, to the point it might feel as though he is constantly hungry.

All babies developed at different rates and need different amounts of food.  You could also try burping him more during a feed, which will help to get rid of wind before it gets to pass out the other end, reducing those screaming sessions from belly aches (only just worked this out with my 5th! LOL).

If he isn't alert, is losing weight or is showing other signs of illness, then take him to see a doctor or health nurse.

Great reply Arna, it makes a lot of sense.  Of course if in doubt, there it always makes sense to seek medical advice, though as you say, babies go through stages of eating a lot and eating a little depending on their growth spurts.

Re: son not interested in sucking his bottle

The baby is 8 weeks old... That is less than 2mths old.  Feeding from anything but a nipple can cause choking at this age, especially if the baby can't sit up on it's own.  Also, imagine how long it would take to feed a baby it's milk by this method.

Re: son not interested in sucking his bottle

Hi

Has he been on the bottle long or have you just recently switched from breastfeeding to bottle feeding? Maybe he is unsure of the bottle if before you were breastfeeding him. Also i agree to check on the teat size. With my kids i used the Avent brand bottles and teats and they come in different flows eg, one hole, 2 holes, 3 holes etc... maybe he is having trouble sucking the milk because there is not enough holes in the teat and it doesnt want to flow out. Another thing could be if you changed formula brands. He might not like the taste of the new formula you got him. When i started my son on the bottle i used the top of the brand S26 but he hated it so i switch to the Heinz brand and he loved it. So it could also be taste in what milk he prefers... hehe... babys can be picky... If that doesnt work either, maybe you can go see you GP or baby health nurse and discuss it with them just in case it might be a health related problem... good luck...

Re: son not interested in sucking his bottle

He was breastfed for 2 weeks and then he started have a lot of gas and diarrhea. The doctor said that maybe he could be sucking air while breastfeeding and it turned out that I was producing enough to keep him fed and full. So I started pumping it into bottles and he took to the bottle right away. He was on a bottle that had a slow nipple for about 3 weeks and then it just kept taking so long for him to eat so I bought some with a medium flow and he has been taking those for the past 2 weeks. I tried a faster flow nipple to today but it was to much for him he got choked a lot. So Im not really sure whats going on. I am a new mother so this all could be normal i am learning everyday. I appreciate the replies.

Re: son not interested in sucking his bottle

Is he getting tired from sucking? Maybe try a teat the next size up, or maybe try a different bottle. But if he dosnt want it then maybe hes just going thru some change, learning something new or maybe hes a little unwell.

I would try the teats first otherwise just keep a eye on it and it mite just pass :)
