Funny behavour in four year old

My only son is turning four in two months. He seems to be in a funny phase right now and I am asking parents out here if they have seen this in their children.

Sometimes when he is reading a car magazine, he would tell me 'Mummy, dont see!' even when I am busy doing my chores and not looking at his magazine. Sometimes when he is running half-naked from the toilet to his bedroom to get a change of clothes, he would be 'annoyed' at my dog and tells my dog not to look at him! The thing is my dog is not even looking at him or is not even interested. He is a dog!

Recently, he went to a holiday programme and spilled some orange juice on his jumper and had it around his lips. He wanted to get to the toilet in time to clean himself up before I fetched him. Things did not turn out how he wanted and I saw him and said hello excitedly to him. He stomped his feet very angrily and cried super loudly. He kept insisting 'mummy dont see!' and even tried to run away when I cuddled him.  I told him it is ok if his lips are dirty, I still love him.  But he kept saying he did not want me to see his dirty lips, wriggled and tried to escape. He just lost control over such a minor thing (in my eyes) and I  could not settle him. On one hand I was totally puzzled at his big response, on the other hand, I was obviously embarrassed in front of hundreds of children and parents.

Does any parent experience this sort of extreme emotions from their children at this age? I wonder if it is normal. He is always quite affectionate and has no other issues but this behaviour is getting me lost.

The way your son is reacting seems a little strange to me.

My eldest is 5 1/2 and continues to run around the house naked as long as it's just me, my husband and his siblings at home.  If we have visitors he is definitely exhibiting signs of not wanting others to see him naked.

I would speak to the doctor next time you go.  I wouldn't make a special trip for it, just next time you are there bring it up.

This is what it sounds like to me: Your son is becoming self-aware which means he may be learning the feeling and experience of embarrassment. If this is the case and he already feels embarrassed about something, sticking around to insist it's okay may be even more embarrassing for him (as he's too embarrassed as it is to listen to what you're saying - he's concentrating on how he feels) and so he then becomes angry at you. I know it sounds so silly from an adult prospective that a dog would be watching him but it's completely normal for his age. At almost 4 years of age children still think that OBJECTS are aware of consciousness depending on their cognitive development. So it's completely normal for your son to think that the dog is watching him run to his room half-naked and become embarrassed about it.

Yeah he is very self-conscious nowadays. Sometimes when daddy is changing him to go for a bath and i enter his room, he also tries to close the door on me. And other times he tells me he doesnt want daddy to see him (naked). We are certainly very used to seeing one another naked in the family since we do bathe together too! I think this self-conscious thingy (not just over nakedness) is getting a bit over him and thus making him a bit out of control emotionally and driving me nuts. Sometimes he gets cranky over this but other times he gets cheeky about it. Talk about PMS in women...children are mysterious too...

At least he thinks the dog is watching him and not the table and chairs ;-)
