breast pumping

For the first 2 weeks, my son was breastfeeding really well, then it was all of the sudden, he seemed to nott ake to it at all. We tried every postition and every technique in the book and nothing seemed to work.So for the past month, i have been pumping every 3-4 hours and freezing the left overs. and everything was going fine.... Now with in the past 2 or 3 days, I have hardly been able to pump enough for one feeding. I've increased my fluids and calories, and I just seem to be drying up more....However, he has started to become interested in my breast again...

My son is almost 10 months and he is my second child. I breast fed my daughter for over a year and she ate perfectly.

Any suggestions on what I can do/eat or what mightbe causeing the drastic, decrese?

Re: breast pumping

I agree with what has already been said - breast pumping is not as good as baby BUT there are different types of breast pumps available. I had to express for first 12 weeks to compliment my 2nd childs feeds (she was underweight) and the nurses said there are two types of breast pumps - Hospital Grade is the BEST, can can hire them at Pharmacies, thru Australian Breastfeeding Association and some hospitals, they are basically just heavy duty with power behind them and if you are only expressing for all feeds you should have this type of machine (Madella I think was the brand but its gone back now so I'm not 100%).

The small pumps you get at Target for example are not intended for long term breast pumping (just for the occasional expressing for that occasional time mummy goes out or something). If you are ONLY expressing till baby gets back to the breast get a proper pump that can really make a huge difference.

Also a herb called Fenegreek can help with milk production - you can get at some pharmacies and health food stores, also lactation consultants can give you the herb or other great advice (often a great place to start if you having troubles with feeding)... Also really suggest the Australian Breastfeeding Assocation, they have support people that can assist you with getting the baby back to the breast.

Fenegreek comes in seeds, tablets, powder and liquid depending on what you can get.I'm guessing it might be in that tea that was already mentioned.

Good luck and good on you for persisting with the breast pump! I'm sure bubby will get back to the breast soon and then the problems will be sorted. I breastfed my first for 22months and still feeding my 2nd (who is 16mths).

Re: breast pumping

As someone said earlier the pump is nowhere near as efficient as the baby at getting milk out so your not getting as much out as bub would therefore starts to dry up. Of course the best answer is to get bub back on the breast but as many know this isn't always possible. As well as keeping up what your already doing some other option may be to

-use breastfeeding tea...I use Weleda...expensive but works

-when pumping change from breast to breast. I find when i can't get any from one, i go to the other and then back and seem to get more that way

-when you can't get any more from pumping try hand expressing i find i get lots more when pump won't get any

hope it all goes well for you

Re: breast pumping

You should be able to let your son suckle at your breast to bring back the milk supply shouldn't you?  Doesn't demand = supply?

I eat 3 meals a day plus snacks inbetween and have a good milk supply - so i dont know why you're drying up

Re: breast pumping

Pumping is not as efficient as a baby, no matter how good the pump is.... so eventually, less and less milk is produced. My suggestion is to get baby back on the breast. The proper sucking and stimulation from baby's mouth should get your milk going again.

Good luck to you.

Re: breast pumping

I can suggest keep doing what you're doing keep up your fluids, and offer the breast as often as required.  It should help increase your supply.

My personal experince was similar.  I b/f my 1st until he was 15months.  My 2nd I couldn't go longer than 6 months.  My supply just seemed to dry up.  I think it was because i was running around a lot more after the older one, and not spending the time actually sitting and feeding like I did with my first.  He would feed for an hour.  I don't remember my second ever feeding that long.

Good luck.
