Re: one year old
Um, one suggestion is to get a Jolly Jumper. I'm not sure if they are available in the US, but we have had one for the last two kids, and it has been useful to give us a bit of time where the baby can amuse themself.
My grandmother used to go through a list when her baby screamed - tired, hungry, hot, cold, dirty, sick, in pain, bored, needs a cuddle. She'd determine which one was the problem, and then fix it if she could. If her baby was just demanding attention, and all other options were exhausted, then she'd be okay about walking away for a while.
At 1 year old, you could engage the child in an activity like block stacking or singing a song, rather than picking it up every time it makes a noise. Try to divert baby's attention until they forget to cry.
That's all I can think of at the moment.
