Amoxillin Rash Alergy

Has anyone toddlers ever had rash allergy reaction after taking amoxillin? My son 8 months got fever+flu+cough so my GP prescribed him with amoxillin syrup. He developed rash after the second dose. I stopped giving him amoxillin after that and only rely on panadol.

My question is: Does it mean my son can't take amoxillin for the rest of his life? Is there any other type antibiotic similar like Amoxillin? How danger is it to give him a second try of amoxillin in the future? Thanks for your help guys....

Re: Amoxillin Rash Alergy

You will need to go back to the GP and advise him/her of this development.  There are other antibiotics which can be used, depending on the bacterial infection it is treating.  Describe to the GP what the rash looked like- it may not even have been due to the antibiotic.  It is quite common for rashes to appear with fever and viral infection.  It may have been coincidental that the rash appeared at the same time as the antibiotic.  If it was due to the antibiotic, usually a rash is as severe as it gets, occassionally there may be an anaphylactic reaction , which is potentially life-threatening.  If your GP thought it was worth him being treated with antibiotics, then he should be on a course of something, but again, discuss this with your GP,  he/she will take into consideration the pros and cons of treatment.

Re: Amoxillin Rash Alergy

I had an allergic reaction of amoxil when I was a child, I came out in hives.  I still can't take amxoil, but it's never been an issue, there are other drugs that can be used.  Make sure you tell your doctor whenever he is perscribed antibitoics.

The problem with it is, that if you have a allergic reaction, it can be more servere the next time, and could cause swelling in the throat, etc, and then you have an emergency on your hands.

Better to be safe, let your doctor know, and they can prescribe him something else.

Any sort of allergic reaction to medicine should be seen by a doctor. There are other sorts of antibotics your son might be able to take but these questions need to be answered by a  doctor.

More importantly that you find out  if this allergy reaction is for life, so you can inform other doctors or medical staff if need be.

Interesting info about Amoxicillin.  It says that up to 10% of children who take it will develop a non-allergic rash, although it is something difficult to distinguish from an allergic rash by an untrained person.

I'd say go and talk to your doctor about it straight away, because you need to know what happened, and what to do next (alternative treatment etc).  It's possible that your son will be unable to take Amoxicillin again.  There are alternatives, but you should know this so that you can inform medical staff in the future if he is truly allergic.

Re: Amoxillin Rash Alergy

Take him to the hospital immediately and have the doctors check him out. Next time he may have an anaphylatic reaction. It's best to get them to check it and have it documented. It can take awhile to get  into an allergist but having it documented by a doctor may help to speed it up.

I have 2 kids with allergies, my daughter has an anaphylatic reaction to peanuts and chickpeas, my son is allergic to cough syrups. Basically the reaction is the same. Rashes, welts, breathing difficulties, leathergy (tiredness) during an attack.

Kids who have excema and asthma are more prone to allergies then kids who don't. If your son has dry skin treat it with Dermaveen Excema cream ( recomended by allergists) to prevent the development of other allergies, dry all clothes, bedding etc that your son uses inside or in a dryer to reduce allergens comming into contact with your son.

I hope this helps, Raven

Re: Amoxillin Rash Alergy

Generally if a child has a reaction like that after just one dose the reaction will get worse next time you try to give it to him.

Notify your doctor.
