Bicycle riding and prego?

Just wondering if anyone knows if it's safe to ride a bicycle while pregnant? Am only 2 months and I love to ride around - nothing heavy duty like long marathons or anything, but just a nice 30minute ride in the morning, etc. Wouldn't be going hard core as far as speed goes either - just nice and casual.

Ask your obstetrician at your next appointment.  I rode an indoor exercise bike until I was 6 months from then onwards it was too uncomfortable on my pelvis as my baby was very low down.  Then I started walking around the block for about 20-30 minutes daily.  Only you will know what your body is capable of at any given time.

I was told that if you're not uncomfortable, then the baby will be fine.  It's a very good thing to keep up exercise while pregnant, so I suggest you make your own judgement about whether you are too out of balance, or too uncomfortable, but otherwise, go right ahead.

I competed in a triathlon when I was about 2 months pregnant - didn't go hard, but finished it.  I also did the Lorne Pier to Pub 1.2 km open water swim whilst pregnant.  Baby's fine.

Might I add that my obstetrician also did the Pier to Pub with me, and he had no concerns about me doing it.

Re: Bicycle riding and prego?

I cycled to about half way thru my second pregnancy, and checked up to make sure it was safe. I was told that it was safe until my centre of gravity had shifted too much as then I would be more likely to fall off (and from memory it varies but it's third trimester with most people). To be honest, I was too tired and uncomfortable to cycle up to that point!

Simple/easy/light exercise during pregnancy is encouraged. It's just when you become further along that you have to weigh up the risks ie falling or bringing on labour because you're working yourself too hard.

As long as you feel comfortable doing it, go right ahead.

I rode my bicycle through two pregnancies until it became uncomfortable, all my friends here rode theirs too and we were encouraged to do so as long as it was just to get about Town, had to give up the long day out cycles though,LOL.

Best wishes.

Re: Bicycle riding and prego?

I'm fairly sure that light excercise is good for you whilst pregnant. The main concern with excercise whilst prego is overheating.  So as long as you don't overdo it you should be fine.  Just keep in mind that the bigger you get, the harder it will be to balance as your balance centre is a little off.

Double check it with your doctor to be sure.
