Re: Ultrasounds in Australia

i am now pregnant with my 4th child and i have 2 scans booked, i have never had to pay for a scan through the hospital, the only time i have heard of anyone paying for them is when you go to a private ultrasound provider or the 3/4d ones.  if you are going through a public hospital you should not have to pay for the scans

Re: Ultrasounds in Australia

with this pregnacy i had to have 2 scans, ( one at 17 weeks and the other 2 weeks later, the babies age was mixed up so things weren't the correct size to be measured at the first scan), with my first baby i only had 1 scan at 18 weeks, both were done through the public health system and if i wanted to get the scans done refered by my local GP at 6 weeks i would have had to pay about $200 per scan, not sure one the Medicare rebate, to get the scan pics was a $5 donation to the hospital, but you can also buy the flims for $13 each, (i think that was the cost)

Re: Ultrasounds in Australia

i had two regular ultra sounds and one more at the end of my pregnancy to check things due to pains i was having, but thank goodness they were normal pains (:

however there was the 4D ultra sound i did not get, because it cost $125, this would have been another if i received it as well.

hope i helped!

Re: Ultrasounds in Australia

Both my pregnancies I saw an obstetrician, and had the u/s done through the local hospital (who have it outsourced to a big firm).  Certainly in my first pregnancy I had to pay for most of them and claim it back through medicare.  I did find some weird loophole though that said that the standard ones had to be paid for but any extra ones due to medical issues were free.  WIth my second I had a health care card and they were all free (covered by medicare).

The standard ones I think are from memory at set times - like 12 weeks and 28 weeks.  With my 2nd pregnancy as I was over 30 I also had a nuchal translucency ultrasound.  Aside from the set ones I only had extra ones late in the pregnancy because of issues - such as a single vessel cord and pre-eclampsia (to check on the baby's health and growth).  SO I think that normally there are only 2-3 unless something occurs that will require extra checking.

Re: Ultrasounds in Australia

The ones I had done at the hospital were free.  I had a couple done refered by a doctor and I had to pay for those, but you get most back thru medicare.  If you have a health care card you shouldn't have to pay for any private ones you have done either.

Re: Ultrasounds in Australia

With my first four pregnancies, I went through the public hospital system, not through a doctor.  When it was ultrasound time, I had three for the first pregnancy and one for each subsequent.  I didn't pay for any of them.  I just went upstairs at the hospital and got it done.  Never paid for anything.

This time, I went to a doctor, because I thought I would develop my Cholestasis.  I had one ultrasound done at an ultrasound place, and had to pay for it.  I've also had to pay for every doctor's appointment I've had.  This is a bit of a shock to me, because I've never paid a cent for anything pregnancy related before this.  If I ever have another one, I'll go straight to the hospital and bypass any doctor.

Re: Ultrasounds in Australia

With all my pregnancies including this one so far I only had 2 and always paid for the first one but you get some money back from Medicare. I think any other ones you get after the first two are all bulked billed by Medicare. With the new 3D and 4D ultrasounds i think you have to pay for them completely but if you have private health insurance you maybe able to claim that back, but im not too sure.
