hearing problems

When my 4th son was born he had the newborn hearing test done and had no hearing in one ear, he was sent for 3 different hearing tests and had a cold a month before, so then he had deafeness in both ears. Specialist said it was due to fuild and had gromets put it at 4mths. Last check the gromets were gone and the specialist didnt want to see him again. Know hes been getting ear infections in his right ear and the last doctor he seen said the grommet was still there so will he need grommets again if he keeps getting ear infections and a hearing test i know he can hear but the specialist thinks hes fine and doesnt want to see him again. thanks

Re: hearing problems

thanks for the answers, im going to get a second refereal to another specalist, I meant to write my 4th child my son (i have 3 boys and a girl) lol  My 8yr old son had his tonsils out last year with the same specialist after another doctor said he should of had them out ages ago. The specialist is really old but heaps of other parents have said hes a good specialist. My friend told me he was old before i went to see him so i wouldnt freak out he looks in his 70's. Im just going to go to get a referall to another specialist to put my mind a rest.

Re: hearing problems

I agree with the other guys, if you are not happy with the specialist get the GP to refer to another, my daughter suffered hearing loss due to ear infections, hearing is such a crucial sense, so go with your gut and do what you think is right.  My GP told me the other day that invariably the parents are right!  It sounds like your GP is on your wavelength, and has a clue.  I do wonder how some people are able to practice medicine!

Hope it all goes well for your son and the infections stop soon - my daughter's ear infections stopped when she was around 2ish - but then her tonsils became a problem, and have been for the past 5 years!  They are  now  coming out, but it may be an idea to get the new ENT to look at your sons tonsils as well - ear infections accompanied by large tonsils and adenoids are very common.

Re: hearing problems

Like Janice said ask your GP to refer you to someone who can actually give you the time of day. He was wrong about the grommet being missing, so there is a possibility he's wrong about needing to see your son too.

My eldest brother was born with no hearing in both of his ears but my parents didn't pick it up until he was almost 2!! They just thought he was ignorant (then again my parents were twits). He had grommets put in and they were forever falling out. He always had leaking ears, this yellow waxy fluid and we were forever trying to clean him up with cotton wool buds. Whenever he had a shower or bath he would have to wear ear plugs to prevent this from making it any worse. He needed a speech therapist and was constantly getting ear infestions with and without the grommets as well as repeated hearing tests for any improvement. It was a very long process - I wish you the best.

Re: hearing problems

If your not satisfied with what this specialist is telling you ( especially when he said that the gromets were gone & another doctor said they were there) .

I would be asking your GP to refer your son to another specialist, even if it is only for peace of mind...but better to be safe than sorry.
