Our twins have the same kind of crib. We converted it to a toddler bed a week after their 2nd birthday. Luckily, they did not protest. But what we had to deal with is them falling (those bedrails are no match for wiggly 2 year olds!!) I hear cries in the middle of the night, and I have to get up and put them back in their beds. I've had to use a pillow on the floor so at least they have a soft landing.   They fell once for a few days, but after that they only fall occassionally. It's been a couple of months now and no one really falls anymore.

my 15 month old son has just moved to the big boy bed,  he had no choice was sick and i spent most night with him lying in his bed (its a single thomas bed i got from spotlight for $150), and now he loves being in the bed. 

it takes time to get them used to it, try him now with a b ig bed and see how he goes

my son is now 2 and was in a big bed at 1. now he is a double bed!!! and sleeps much better as he can move around more.

My boys werr about 2.5 give or take when we put theminto beds.  But it was a king single not a toddler bed.
