formula question

Hi all,
My girl's (3 wks old) are on Karicare Gold Plus and for the past week or two have been quite fussing on their bottles. They'll start drinking quite happily but then start to winge and pull away from their bottle but then quite happily take it back, suck for a bit and do it again. It's not wind as we've tried that. Also their stools are very loose and watery. We make up the formula exactly to the directions. Both my boys were on the same formula when they were babies and I never once had a problem so I'm really stumped.

I have the child health nurse coming here on Friday but I'm just after some opinions before I ask her.

Thanks in advance
Amanda xxxx

Re: formula question

It reminds me of reflux. My twins suffered from reflux at 3 months on. One day (stupid me), I unthinkingly ate hot wings. That evening when I breastfed, they sucked as they normally would but then pulled away and cried. Then they would suck again and pull away and cry all over again. They were clearly hungry, but was in too much pain.

Re: formula question

Might not be the formula itself, it could be the teet. Different teets have different flow rates and are made for different ages and stages (keep in mind that babies don't read the teet packet where it shows the type per age, so they don't always comply to the rules of the company that produced it. LOL ). If the teet is too fast or too slow in flow, babies will often behave that way.

Re: formula question

Maybe ask your doctor, some new born's stomachs can't handle normal formula. We were told our son was lactose intolerant for ages but one day I accidently gave him some food with milk in it and he stomached it fine. I asked her what was going on and she said sometimes babies can't stomach the regular formula and need to be put on the lactose-free or soy formula. Sometimes they display the same symptoms as having a lactose intolerance. Learn something new every day!

Re: formula question

Watery poo is an indication of either overfeeding or lactose intolerance ( i'd go with the latter) try a lactose free formula.

All the best

Re: formula question

I was thinking the SAME thing.

BTW how early were the twins?? Sometimes when babies are premature their LES (lower esophageal spincter) isn't mature and it will cause reflux. Some kids needs meds until that muscle gets stronger and can clsoe properly.

I know here in the states preemies are normally put on special formulas anyways as their GI systems have a harder time with regular ones.

it maybe the girls dont like the taste of it and it upsets their tummy.

Re: formula question

Hi,

I had my youngest on Karicare Gold plus first, he was very fussy and unsettled.  His stools were very watery and loose aswell, and extremly stinky.  I changed him to the normal S26, and he feed alot better, slept better and his stools became better.  You might just have to try another formula, and find one that suits them better.  Some of the formula that have the pre-biotics can be upsetting for some babies.

Good luck.
