You could help her by being there to talk to, offering to pay small bills (if you can afford to and they are attempting to look for work and have hopes to find it soon), or by helping her find work through people you know etc

 Maybe they should look for any job (if they are trying to get back into whatever feald they were in before) Or maybe see if people around there comunity/suburb need someone to walk dogs, iron, go shopping for them. It will atleast get them some money until they can find other jobs :)
