Ears

My four year old at times get a lot of wax in his ears, should I look into seeing an ear specialist or just get his ears cleaned out at the doctors. We use Aqua Clear and Waxol...when he gets sick, I notice now that these products may not be working as well. I had grommets when i was younger and so did my son's uncle. He doesn't get ear aches, but I notice a difference in him responding to different frequencies of sound. Just curious on which way to investigate?

Re: Ears

Hi there,

Grommits won't help wax build up. They are only put in to alleiviate the pressure behind the eardrum when there is constant prssure due to chronic infection to prevent the eardrum from bursting frequently and scarring. Have you tried, after softening the wax with the waxol, using a "tissue spear"to gently wipe out the wax? You take a tissue, tear it into quarters and roll it tightly at one end. This way, it is soft enough not to damage the eardrum ( like cotton buds can) but they are quite effective in sopping up the wax before it dries out and hardens again. My daughter loves having her ears cloeaned this way! She lays on my lap and is in heaven! Wax in itself won't affect their ears, but can making hearing a bit hard when the ear canal is blocked! I have had to take my little one to have her ears gently syringed a few times when a big wax plug builds up. They just use warm water and syringe it into the ear until the wax plug comes out. It feels funny, but doesn't hurt unless they have an infection. Hope that helps!

Re: Ears

HI there,

My 2 1/2 yr old had that problem afew weeks ago, ie lots of solid wax in her ears. She was prescribed Waxol but obviously it didnt work since my little girl found it irritating and pulled it out in her sleep. Doc also suggested ear candles which worked wonders. Its a beeswax candle that sort of vacuums all the wax out (very gently of course).  Just go to the chemist n ask for the childrens ear candles, they come in pairs and u just have to make sure you have sumone handy to help you hold him down while u stick the ear candle in there. All up it takes about half n hour (15 minutes per ear) and at the end u get to see all the contents (grose i know!) but you will be rest assured it would have cleaned it all out. It may sound harsh but it actually is very calming and he may even fall asleep half way. Give it a try and see how it goes.. If u have the same problem they have adults ear candles as well, so give yourself a treat..

Good luck XOXOXOX

Re: Ears

Hi Rachel,

My Josh has the same problem. He has always had lots of ear wax to the point that most of the time his doctor can't see the ear drum. We tried a wax softening ear drop but try and get a 3 year old to lie still for 10 minutes after doesn't really work.

When i was younger i had to get my ear clean out at the doctors once a fortnight due to the same problem but doctors these days tend to stay away from that practice due to the pain of having it done.

The best thing to do would be speak to the doctor and see what they say.

Good Luck, there is nothing worse than ear problems
