has a temp but won't take panadol.

My lil Ratbag is not well guys and I need some advice as he has a temp of 38.1, his symptoms include inappatence, lack of thirst, vomiting (once at about 3 am this morning) and intermittant coughing fits! His daddy has also been unwell but rather vomiting has suffered from the other end! My main concerns at the moment is his reluctance to drink and take panadol for the temp! What can I do for him. I will unlikely be able to get him into a doctors today (and I don't feel it requires a trip to the Emergency dept) and I can't get to the pharmacist or supermarket (for icepoles) as it is bucketing down atm and I have no car. Plz help

Re: has a temp but won't take panadol.

I hope your little guy is better by now but for future reference, my son does the same and we've tried the following:

keeping panadol in the fridge lessens its flavour (works for everything, including cheap wine :))

use a syringe to inject small amounts at a time into his mouth

disguising it in watered down juice or luke warm milo

following it up with something sweet - like a marshmallow

I know when my son is really sick as he won't take any medicine - if he's asking for it, he doesn't relaly need it ;)

Re: has a temp but won't take panadol.

I have a friend who boy won't take panadol.  She uses panadol supositories (sp?) for him, he's 3. Not the nicest, but if it works, maybe worth a try.

Wish you the best

Yeah, thats what we did tonight as I had one left in the medicine cabinet, but I really really hate doing it! I'm scared I'm gonna hurt him! Funny my partner mentioned about me being the medical one (veterinary nurse) and I can't even stand giving my son a suppository! I guess thats a little different tho'. Thanks for your suggestion!

Re: has a temp but won't take panadol.

Hey guys, thx for your advice, just want to let you all know, he has deterioted further despite managing to get some panadol into him and I have booked an emergency appointment with our gp in about 1 hr(better than the possiblity of sitting at the hospital for 4hrs+ or even being sent away as we have in the past). He started getting all confused and rambling incomprehensible jibberish. Then just fell asleep on the couch. Will update you further when we know more, Shayne is on his way home now too!

Re: has a temp but won't take panadol.

Awwww sweety I hope he gets better soon! Does he like to suck on ice cubes? Or perhaps if you have any cordial or something like that you could make your own home made icey pole? Even without the stick if you can't find anything lol or you could use a spoon in a cup (could use the spoon end as a stick). Umm you could keep him comfy like laying on the lounge watching tv to make sure the fluids he has stay in longer, if you do give him a bath the new way doctor's recommend is to have luke-warm temperature (it used to be cool temps). If that doesn't work then you may have to try the tough love approach for his well-being xox

I usually water down Jedd's meds to make the taste not as bad. Sometimes that will do the trick.

If he won't take panadol the only other thing I would suggest is a tempid bath...  That worked wonders in keeping the temp down when my son refused to take Panadol...

If he refuses that give him the choice.. One or the other mate.. I am sure he'd choose one of them.. Hopefully...
