Disagreeing on schools for autistic son

Hi, my dilemma is that my 9 year old autistic son who also has ADHD and a mild intellectual disorder is currently in a mainstream primary school in grade 3 with an aide 2 hours a day, but is still at prep level and not learning. I am considering a special school for him but his father is dead against it . Has anyone else ever faced this sort of thing and what did you do? Thanks.

You may have to tutor him at home to get him learning what he needs, other than that maybe a review of the teaching, his IQ and his aid money. If the aid has to deal with the rest of the class and leave your son then he isnt getting his time, if they are not given quality programs then he isnt going to learn and if he needs more aid time then getting him assessed to see what his level is may get you extra funding meaning he has more aid time. Failing all this then see if there is a special ed class within the school or another school nearby that he may be better off in.

I know a girl who was in one of these classes and she started doing mainstream math and a couple other subjects, she was still behind as was her sister who was in another school so they got them tutored and they both excelled.

Re: Disagreeing on schools for autistic son

as a mum of a child in grade 2 who has ADD and high functioning Autism, I would say find a halfway school. I used to go to school when I was yr 1-5 and they had what they called the SPER centre and that was for special ed kids but in the afternoon they had "normal"class time.

My son is in a mainstream school and every day he has "special" class where him and a few other boys ( all Autistic) do special learning of fine and gross motor skills as well as extra learning such as emotions and they also talk to their EA's about whats bothering them. (kind of counciloring) My son loves it and is always happy when he does these classes.

Ask your school if they will do special class for your son as he should have this. there are special PC programs that you can buy for them, word shark is 1 that my son adores.

good luck and remember your sons best interests are at heart here not anyone elses.
