Re: Any Tips on How To Get Rid Of Dummy???

When it was time for our twins to give up their dummies, it was close to Christmas. We talked with them alot about how we were going to give the dummies to santa in exchange for an extra-special present. We psyched them up in the weeks before Christmas and then on Christmas Eve, the dummies went into the santa stockings and when they woke up in the morning there was a present in place of the dummy.  In the days that followed, they occasionally asked for their dummies but overall they were pretty good. We were lucky that it went smoothly for us.  Good Luck!!!

Re: Any Tips on How To Get Rid Of Dummy???

We had the 'Dummy Fairy' come to our house when Jackson (my eldest) was 2 and a bit . Just like the Tooth Fairy, the dummy fairy comes in the night and takes the dummies that have been left out for him/her and leaves a prezzie. What and value are up to you and the Dummy Fairy! We worked up to it for a little while,  telling Jackson that he was getting a big boy and soon the Dummy Fairy would come to collect his dummies because he's a big boy now and the dummies need to be given to little babies. It worked really well. Jack got a toy he loved from the Dummy Fairy and the few times he asked for it we were able to say 'Remember? The Dummy Fairy came took you dummies and you got that lovely present!'

Mind you, I found the stash of dummies a few months later, where I'd hid them, not confident enough to throw them out straight away!!!

Good luck!

Re: Any Tips on How To Get Rid Of Dummy???

Do what we did........during a time when our kids were distracted, we took the dummy away and that was that.

When the screaming, crying or tantrums broke out, we simply said that they were no longer babies and were too old for dummies.

Our oldest made very little fuss, our second put up a little fuss, but got used to it pretty fast......our youngest never had a dummy, she was totally happy without it...

LOL oh the powers of a toddlers demands (they are so clever arn't they?) just throw them away, put up with a few days of screaming and tell her that she is not a baby anymore and big girls don't have them. don't give in and you'll win eventually. ::)

Re: Any Tips on How To Get Rid Of Dummy???

I've never had this problem but my uncle did with one of my cousins. They took all her dummies and cut them up (without her knowledge), when she asked for it they showed her them said to her they were all broken and they couldn't buy anymore because the supermarket ran out. She cried for couple of days and they consoled her and told her that she was a big girl now and didn't need them anyway. She was 3 I think.

Cheers Raven

Re: Any Tips on How To Get Rid Of Dummy???

We used a dummy out of necissty, not for comfort but he would otherwise at 3days old be drinking 120mls every 3 hrs, sometimes more frequently, his daddy was the same, introduced a dummy and he settled down, it was not that he was hungary, just he had a strong urge for sucking!! We simply just took it away on his first bday and had no real problems as it wasn't used for comfort, sorry to sound harsh and this is my personal opinion, you may just have to suck it up and deal with a few days of irritibilty if the santa thing or even the bday idea doesn't work. Both of which are fantastic ideas. I don't imagine a dummy would be doing the teeth much good!

Re: Any Tips on How To Get Rid Of Dummy???

Our son was very attached due to his GERD, it gave him great relief but it was still time for it to go.

He had bit  a hole into one and when he tried to suck on it he got a funny look on his face. I took that opportunity to tell him Oh no, the "suckers" are broken"

Anytime he asked for it after that, I reminded him that they were broken.

My sisters little girl was WAY more attached. They just had to go cold turkey and endure about 4-6 days of non stop screaming until she learned how to soothe pacifier herself in a different manner.

I haven't been through this yet with my own but apparently my parents told me that our family cat ate it.  My mom says I cried horribly for it several nights and after that I got over it.

Good luck!

Re: Any Tips on How To Get Rid Of Dummy???

My mum did this with me: "Big girls don't have birthday parties with dummies" so I threw it in the bin myself lol I was lucky with my son, I took the dummy away from him gradually so he just had it at night time at about 7-8 months. Then I took it away from him all together and replaced the dummy comfort with a few bedtime songs.

Re: Any Tips on How To Get Rid Of Dummy???

We are having the same problem, my 2 and a bit year old son only has his in the bed with him and he know this.  We are thinking of giving it to Santa this year and in return Santa will give a fairly good pressie.   The other thing we have thought of is to cut it up bit by bit...  To cut a bit off and look like it is damaged next week damage it a bit more and so on until he gets rid of it himself.    "Sorry mate it's broken, no more dummy"  You could try something like this it may be a bit less stressful than going cold turkey

Re: Any Tips on How To Get Rid Of Dummy???

Hi, The only problem with cutting them week by week is that she just screams at me and says"go  to the shop and get me a brand new dummy" And when i do, she usually bites it and pops it straight away and she won't use that one anymore... I was thinking of trying the "Santa Approach"... But i just know she will ask for it and scream for it after a little while as we have tried this when we got her a New Trampoline... Also, she puts her fingers in her mouth if she can't find her dummy... It seems i may have to be the big fat meanie and just do it cold turkey.... I guess it's like if you were a Smoker????

this may cause a few tears but you just have to take it off her she will be upset for a week but after that you will find she will forget about it you might have a few sleepless nights though.
