Post Needle question

Hi all,

Josh had his 4 year old needles yesterday and was very brave. This morning we woke up to Josh with a temperature of 38 and 1 VERY red arm with a rash down his arm. After some vomiting and a temperature that got as high as 39.5 we ended up at the doctors. He was given some panadol at the doctors,Phenergan and Nurofen when we got home (all this on the advice of his doctor).
This afternoon the temperature is almost back to normal but the thing is now his arm where the reaction is is super itchy. Does anyone know if this is normal or do i need to take him back? Also i am trying to stop him itching it, is there any reason to stop him itching it or can i just let him go and be comfortable?

Thanks in advance
Juzzy

Re: Post Needle question

Juzzy your doctor  said ok to Phenergan, I would try given Josh some more as it is an  antihistamine which should relieve some of the itching. How long ago did you give him some maybe it has worn off, now.

Tea Tree oil, Aloe Vera Cream or Pinetarsol lotion is great for itching.

Re: Post Needle question

Thanks Janice,

Josh uses Phenergan for all his allergies that is why the doctor told me to use it. It makes sense that his itching came back when it did because he only had 2 doses of phenergan today so it must have started to wear off. I gave him another dose before bed so i am hoping he can have a peaceful sleep tonight unless the temp starts again in which case we may end up at the hospital. Very stressful day here today.

Re: Post Needle question

Try some Derma Veen ezcema lotion/cream on the site. It may help relieve the itching. It retails AUS $10 and can be found at the chemist.

It really helps my kids when they have a reaction to something.

Re: Post Needle question

Thanks for the idea Raven. I will see how he goes and if the itching continues through tomorrow i will head to the chemist but with all Josh's allergies i wouldn't really like to use anything that hasn't been Oked by is doctor.

Re: Post Needle question

It was recommend to me by my daughters allergist specialist as it doesn't contain any common allergies but definately check with your doc or pharmcist.

Re: Post Needle question

You could also try putting a cool/cold face washer on the arm, I find this helps when my son gets hives, or a coolish shower or bath.  Hot baths or anything will make it worse.  I would just keep up the phernegen and the panadol/nurofen and hoppefully it settles down. Good luck.

Re: Post Needle question

Thanks for the facewasher idea. I did try that one this morning but he didn't want it. I will try again tonight (when he is asleep)

I will keep up with the phenergan tonight but i am only going to give him more nurofen if he needs it, he has had alot of medicine today.

Re: Post Needle question

Because he has reacted to the needles, the itching is completely normal, the body would of released a histimine (which is making it itchy) so you could try a childrens anti histimine, if that doesn't help relieve it then I'd probably go back to the docs! The rash and temp are also symptoms of the histimine release in his blood as a esult of the reaction! Just check that what ever anti histimine you use is ok for use with the other medicines your using! Hope hes feeling tonnes better real soon, brave boys don't deserve to get sick!!!

Re: Post Needle question

Thanks for that Hun,

Yep the antihistamine we use is Phenergan and can be used safely with the nurofen and panadol. Phenergan is the only antihistamine he can use, it seems to be doing the trick but it's just the itching that is driving him nuts.

The brave boy is getting a very big treat next week because mummy still feels so bad about it all. After me being so worried about how he was going to deal with it once we got to the doctors yesterday then being such a good boy having them done, he really didn't deserve to react so badly.

Anyhoo, thanks for the info

Love Juzzy xoxoxoxoxo

Re: Post Needle question

Your welcome! I've never had to use phenergan or any other antihistimine for that matter with ratbag, so wasn't aware it was one. lol.

Just keep up what your doing and I'm sure with lots of TLC he'll be his normal self in no time. xx.

Re: Post Needle question

Ps, if he starts having trouble breathing at all or the rash gets too much worse after the antihistimine, take him straight to hospital!

Re: Post Needle question

Again thanks for that. The rash seems to have gone now just a really big red area around the needle site. Don't worry, if he shows any signs of breathing difficulties i will be calling an ambulance.
