Baby's physical abnormality

I recently saw a friend of a friend who had her newborn baby with her. The baby had a growth on the middle of her forehead, the size and shape of a large marble. I told her the baby looked very cute, and asked her what the growth on her forehead was. She told me it was an angioma, which appears in about 15% of newborns; she called it her 'Bindi'. Question: do you think it was inappropriate for me to ask this question? How would you feel in the mother's place?

If I was the mother with the baby, I would rather you asked the question out of interest than just stared.

I think you did the right thing.

Re: Baby's physical abnormality

my little girl has one in the middle of her forehead too, and i dont mind people asking, especially whe they have children with them, becaus ethe more people that know the better. As soon as I explain that it will go away with age, kids are over it and not interested anymore. Id rather people asked instead of staring at it, because even as a one year old, my wee one knows when people are being a bit odd lol

I think you did great.  The mother probably appreciated you asking about it, rather than just staring.

I can attest to that.

Jedd lived with a NG feeding tube in his nose from the time he was 9 weeks old to the time he was 8.5 months old. People STARE, it is soooooo much better to ask. Our stares when down when he had a permanant one placed directly into his stomach, we could "hide" it.

I always used it as an opportunity to educate those who had asked me. After all, they want to know since they asked, so I gladly told them what it was and why he had it.

I think it's fine--if you had said, "Ew, what is that thing?" that would have been rude.

Not at all; absolutely appropriate! Sounds like you handled it well.

If it were me I'd be glad to've had the opportunity to talk about it.

Personally I don't think it was inappropriate. You were just curious and it seems as though the mother was fine with informing you.
