Period and breasfeeding

I had a baby almost 6 months ago she is 100% breasfed and has at least 5-6 feeds a day. Last month I was stressed out to the max and sick and my baby was sick and didnt eat as much as other times. I got the period back and there was nothing unusall about it. Now almost 7 weeks later there is no sign of my period. There is absolutly no chance that I am pregnant its not that. My baby is eating normally now so is it posible to get the period for 1 time and then for it to stop???

Re: Period and breasfeeding

Yes, perfectly normal! I fed DD2 for 2.5 years and my first period appeared at about 20 months, and then when I should have been due again DD2 got Chicken Pox and I got a Flu-like bug. I was so poorly I was barely drinking and I was trying to feed DD2 to comfort her thru her illness and she would feed for a bit and then ask for a drink of water. MIL had to come and help in the end as I was too poorly to change her nappy even. Anyway, she asked for drinks to top up with for two days and then as I started to improve she was back to normal. The period never appeared until another month had passed. I expect if I was too poorly to produce enough milk, my body may just have responded by skipping a cycle. Or I was lucky! Anyway, my cycle was very haphazard for the first 6 months and since finishing feeding her it has settled right down. My guess is this is what has happened to you.

Re: Period and breasfeeding

Perfectly normal; don't worry.

When the periods start again they're a bit irregular & 'all over the place'. That's why the family planning people encourage breast-feeding mums to use some extra form of contraception... 'coz otherwise new mums can end up falling pregnant again & never even know it!

Sounds like its about time Bub started having some solids anyway; so expect your periods to be erratic while you're still feeding but be aware you're fertile.

Re: Period and breasfeeding

Hi there. This happened to me with my twins. I breastfed them for 14 months, but when they were about 4 months old, I had a period. I was quite surprised since I never had my period with my first until I stopped breastfeeding him at 12 months.  But to my surprise, I only bled once. I never really bled again until a few weeks after I stopped at 14 months, at which point my regular period began.

I mentioned this to my OB/GYN at the time and he wasn't concerned.
