I just dont know

I have a 4month old (well nearly 4 months) who has bad breathing problems..
Hes ALWAYS had to work to breath and ALWAYS breathed faster then normal... the pediatrition when he was born wasnt to concerned.. i was

So anywayss over a month ago i took him to the dr, becuase he had also developed a wheeze.. was told he had bronciolitis give him predmix come back in a week.. the next day he was worse so i took him back to see our own dr (she hadnt been there the day before) she said hes fine keep with the predmix n come back next week...
Next day i took him to playgroup thts run by the midwife, she looked at the way he was breathing, and how fast told me to take him to the hospital... when we got there they rushed him to resus calling out code emergancys n everything and all i could say was the dr said he was fine:(
SO they jab him with needles all the time hes still smiling and everything so the let us go a few hours later... BECAUSE he was smiling.. he cant be sick if hes smiling aparently...
NExt day back at the hospital cuz he hasnt changes... then a week later... all 3 times we get the same response hes still smiling hes not sick.

Back to the dr for a refferal to a peadiatrition n chest xrays... chest xrays are clear, n no peadiatrition can see him till december :(
Our midwife rang EVERY single one in our area..
SO she got us in to see a specialist at the childrens hospital maybe next month.
I dont know WHY these drs wont listen to me though, or tell me whats wrong with him!
They all say hes GOING to have asthma when hes old enough to be diagnosed
WHY cant they diagnose now? why cant they give him something to hellp him breath?
AND WHY THE HELL all of a sudden is his skin colour and breathing rate so big of a deal AFTER the midwife said something NOT when i said something!!

Re: I just dont know

My daughter was diagnosed with asthma at the age of 14 months- if there are predisposing factors then a diagnosis may be made prior to 2 years of age, including family history and repeated episodes of bronchiolitis.  If there is a wheeze or cough associated with the faster breathing then it may be asthma.

another issue to consider may be pulmonary hyertension, its rare but treatable, and could also account for the increased breathing rate.

cystic fibrosis may not necessarily be picked up in the initial guthrie and a sweat test may be ordered to rule that one out.

another rare condition is tracheomalacia- where the upper airway collapses a little during breathing, causing increased breathing rate, increased work of breathing and sometimes noisy breathing.

they are the ones that i can think of off the top of my head (i am very tired today)............i hope the specialist can find an answer for you.

xx josie

Re: I just dont know

aparently at his age they cant give him ventolin :/

And in australia they cant diagnose asthma till 2 when there is no family history or history of exma.

My daughter just got diagnosed at 18 months (her breathing is NOWHERE near as bad as jays) Because I have asthma and she is always having probs with ecxma.

The hospital said they could diagnose jay at 1 because breanna AND me have it...

It would just be nice to have an answer... im really hoping that asthma is the answer because asthma is somethng i can deal with... it can be treated its a normal thing.

The other possibiltys are kinda scary and most involve surgurey

Re: I just dont know

My son was diagnosed with asthma at 1 year but his father gets asthma during cold weather and something after having a chest infection or cold/flu and everyone in his family also has it. On my side my youngest brother had severe asthma when he was younger.

Re: I just dont know

I have 2 year old twins that were born 6 1/2 weeks early. From very early on, when they have a cold they wheeze heavily and breathe fast. From the first time I took them to the doctor (at only a few months old), they have diagnosed them with asthma. Now at 2, they still get asthma when they get a cold.

I am in the U.S., so the procedure is probably a lot different from Australia. But during the first time I took the to the pediatrician and I said they wheeze, the first thing they do is to check their blood oxygen level to make sure they're getting enough oxygen. And they do. Then they put them on a nebulizer with ventolin and then checked their breathing after that to check for wheezing. When the wheezing is much reduced, they say it's asthma.  So we were sent home with a nebulizer and ventolin and some steroid to use with it.

Your child could have asthma and may just occasionally need some breathing treatment. I hope this is the case and nothing more serious.

Good luck.

Re: I just dont know

The symptoms you're describing sound like the same sort've symptoms my son had before we were told he had asthma. Brent isn't here so I can't ask what age babies/toddlers are usually diagnosed or given ventilin. I can say though that predmix helped a great deal and is also good for fighting off colds, fevers and ear ache. The predmix helped the raspiness in his breath. He was on ventilin for about a week and then it disappeared.
