breastfeeding

This is kind of awkward to ask about, but I am having trouble with my milk supply and I can also feel lumps in my breasts. Is this a problem? Also, my right breast seems to always have at least twice as much milk as my left breast. Is this bad? I have tried to massage out the lumps and I do get more milk when I do this but I can never get them completely soft, I am also trying a warm wet cloth to work them out. Any suggestions?

Re: breastfeeding

Try putting raw babbage leaves in your bra.  Leave them there for a few hours.  They are cold when they go in and very limp later but it helps to break up the lumps or mastitis.  It also helped when I stopped breast feeding after 3 weeks. Make sure the whole breast is covered.  Works a treat.  Good luck.

Re: breastfeeding

If you have plugged ducts (which is what the lumps in your breast probably are), it might mean that the baby isn't emptying the entire breast when feeding.  I don't know if you switch sides after a set amount of time--but if you do, try to let the baby empty one entire side before switching to the other.

For immediate relief, warm showers and warm compresses are good.

Re: breastfeeding

3 tips....

1. Increase your fluid intake and eliminate all caffiene and gurana from your diet as this will decrease your milk supply.

2. Try feeding more on the side that has less milk, it should help increase your milk supply.

3. My breasts often feel lumpy when breast feeding but I would go to your GP or DR and get it checked as it maybe mastisis (sorry about the spelling!) It can cause hard lumps to form in your breast and your milk will be lumpy too.

Re: breastfeeding

You are experiencing blocked ducts. Do your best to take care of it before it starts hurting and turns into mastitis.  I suggest to try and massage your breasts were the lumps here under a warm shower, or you may try it while baby is breastfeeding. Though this might bother baby because it may sometimes unlatch baby.    Try breastfeeding longer on the lumpy breasts and start on that side until it gets better. Ttry feeding in different position, as this would also help baby empty the breast more efficiently.

Re: breastfeeding

Thanks for the help! I am going to try your suggestion about massaging in the shower and also if it hasn't cleared up in a few days I'm due for a doctor's visit soon anyway so I will ask him about it too.
