Re: when should my son stop drinking formula?

Pediatricians usually tell parents to transition to cow's milk at 12 months old. If your child is already 12 months old, you can transition slowly if you'd like, by mixing formula with cow's milk (whole milk) and slowly phase the formula out.  As far as cow's milk, you don't want to give as much of it as when you give formula because it can cause constipation. About 2-3 sippy cups a day is plenty.

Re: when should my son stop drinking formula?

Well I was going to ask this question !! But my son is 17 months and has allergies and is on soy formula and only just got back on the charts but also started walking.. He also got really sick a few times which caused a heart murmor. At the moment he's good and his immune system might be better from child care. He does sippy cups for water but refuses for milk.. I still add baby cereal (dairy free) to his weetbix and other meals like soy yougurt for added nutrients. when he is sick he starts to refuse food before he refuses to play with toys. I have the feeling I should keep him on the formula for longer.. But try to get him on the sippy cup for milk. He has a 240 for breakfast and two 120 mls during the day. THere is no follow on formula dairy free. What is this addon stuff you are talking about

Re: when should my son stop drinking formula?

Usually with my other 3, I started switching at 11 mths (as I was breastfeeding) just one bottle with a quarter milk and the rest water. I had to put chomper on formula at 7 and 1/2 mths as he was a biter. He's quite a bit smaller and i have continued with formula for allergy prone children to help maintain his weight. There are additives you can buy  (I mean by additives, stuff you add to cows milk to make sure they get all they need), Otherwise you can used the next step formula (usually if your worried about allergies) which they can have up to 3 yrs.

Cheers Raven

Re: when should my son stop drinking formula?

My son is just over 13 months old, I've only started to give him cows milk in the last week or two. I do 50% milk then water it down 50% to help him digest it properly. As he gets closer to 1 1/2 I'll decrease the water added to it.

Re: when should my son stop drinking formula?

I read on your profile that you son is 12mths old, If I remember correctly I started to take my son off his formula at about this age, and swithched to full cream cows milk.

You can switch now if you like but I would slowly introduce it to see how he goes you can do half formula and half milk in a bottle for a week then slowly increase it till it is the amount he drinks.

By now he may decrease his bottles the more he eats the less the bottle become.     I think we had a bed time bottle up until he was bout 15mths  You may also like to try your son with a sippy cup at this age.  Milk in a cup rather than a bottle.  It is all trial and error and what you and your wife think is right. There is no right or wrong.

good luck

Re: when should my son stop drinking formula?

That is great news your son can use a sippy cup... you and your wife could then just stop the formula and go with the full cream cows milk.  He may take awhile to get used to it as he probably now associates the cup with juice.  Like I said just try him on a little bit of milk fist to rule out any allergies or intolerances...
