Childcare and constant sickness

Is it normal for my daughter to come home with a bug EVERY time she goes to childcare? I'm at my wits end after 2 months and seriously contemplating pulling her out. It wouldn't be so bad except it goes through my other 2 children so we spend the whole week sick! I'm so tired of constantly cleaning up vomit/diarrhea, having coughs and runny noses, fevers and whatever else. Or am I just being a sook?! I know kids get sick, but this is just crazy.

Re: Childcare and constant sickness

My daughter has something AT LEAST once a week...

I get sick of it but... we still keep going. The big problem is that some parents send there kids when they are sick. I know of one that rung me up for panadol for her boy (same age ) then sent him  to school that very same day!!!

Then there are the bugs that are contagious a few days before they actually get sick like chicken pox!

I had my son at the hospital a few weeks ago... n they said that babies that get sick alot ewnd up having a great immune system when they are older

Re: Childcare and constant sickness

My 17 month boy has been sick every time for 8 months, he had temps of 39.5 c 3 days for 3 weeks and it gave him a heart murmor, i had to take leave off work and he him away from too much contact. i work 2 days a week. Unfortunatly some kids get more sick than others. Corey hasnt been that sick since we had the time off so I'm hoping that this is the end. But he hasn't been eating today and I feel like throwing up and haven't eaten much.. I do believe you that its after every time !!!!!

But when people say that the kids get it when they go to school, but i haven't heard any one really complain that the kids were really sick for months on end... I'm guessing that they get some illneses spread over 5 years so it doesnt seem so bad, so when they go to school they are already immune to a lot more than what a 11  - 17 monther whould be.

Re: Childcare and constant sickness

Hi,

I had a similar experience with my youngest daughter, she was 14months old.  I ran the babies room and she was in the same room so I knew the hygiene standards were excellent.  I found it was just too many different families with different illnesses coming in each week.  My daughter's immune system just couldn't handle it, she was sick constantly. In the end I quit. Now I run a family day care and my daughter's health has been so much better.  Each week we have children from 6 families rather than 40 families in the day care. Even when she started school her health has been good.  My advice would be to look into family day care for your child, maybe that will work better for you.

Good luck, I hope her health improves.

Yes well; every time does sound excessive. But most likely its just that her immune system isn't strong (so you'd be going thru it when she went to school anyway; might as well get it over now). There's any amount of herbal & vitamin mixes to build up immunity... Plenty of garlic in the family meals is always useful; plenty of Vitamin C is as well. Encourage her & other family members to wash their hands before eating or putting hand to mouth for any reason. Especially after using the toilet (for some reason fellas are not good at this; they forget that they've just touched a heap of surfaces that are full of little nasties like fecal matter.) If it often seems you're 'the last one standing' & tending to everyone else.... Chances are that simple hygeine will make a difference; after all; you remember to wash your hands, don't you (so naturally it takes longer for you to get sick)! Point out this little detail to the others in the family; it might make them more interested in soap & water... If you're feeling very pro-active; you might ask the ch/care centre if they'd do some extra work on teaching hand-washing to the kids... Find/make up some bright posters... Find/create little boxes for them to stand on to reach the handbasins... I know that modern childrearing/caring/teaching practices often skip things like hand-hygeine (we all got so bored w/ the nagging; "go wash your hands before dinner" that we tend not to use the refrain on our kids). But its actually more important than ever. (Since we can now contract some exotic disease from a trip down to the shop, thanks to airtravel.) And w/ the common modern use of anti-bacterial surface sprays etc; we can all become a bit sensitive to beyond-our-household organisms... Our immunities are not what our grandparents had; yet we ask more of them.

Fresh fruit & veg (in amazingly large quantities; to my way of thinking) is what we're all supposed to be getting... But who of us really does eat at least 2 pieces of fruit & 5 serves of veg a day?... Or makes sure we eat only 2 or 3 serves of wholegrain-only carbs & drinks at least 2 litres of unadulterated water? We all know we're supposed to... There just isn't the time (or inclination) for most of us.

My daughter suffered a lot of tummy bugs; she seemed to always be getting 'the runs'... I had to learn to live w/ special 'dire rear' feeding much of the time... I researched all the herbals & old wives I could find so she lived on barley water, dry toast, egg whites, jelly, marshmallows, carrot soup etc much of the time. I sounds like you're experiencing similar probs; very wearing I know!

Deep breath & soldier on, my friend; this too shall pass!

Re: Childcare and constant sickness

Raven gave you good advice. I taught K5 in a private school and we also had kids ages 3 year old class and 4 year old class. You would be surprised how easy they spread it to one another.

Have you asked about the cleaning schedule ect.???? Thier  sickness policy????

Good cleaning can go a long way to cutting down on illnesses.

Re: Childcare and constant sickness

Hubby use to work in child care as an adult he was sick on and off for a yr but kids can be sick on and off for 6 mths after starting childcare. It's just because their bodies aren't rsistant to these new bugs and they spread quickly to because kids don't have the greatest hygiene practices...lol! But the severity does ease up over time.

It's the cost of having childcare!!!!! Hubby was sick severely for 6 mths, like when he got a bug or a virus it laid him out! But it got better. So the best thing you can do is get an excellent multi vitamin tablet for your kids and build their immuno systems.

SMSJS has great knowledge on this stuff, just drop a line to him or add an entry in his lounge and he can tell you what sort of stuff should be in the vitamins to best help your kids.

Cheers Raven!
