4 month old with bad excema

my 4 month old has rather bad excema on her face and the back of her head and on scalp
i went to the chemist and asked them about it and what i could use since most of it is on her face they gave me this new cream out called BECODERM used it for a week but there was no change in it
ended up takeing her to doctor on monday for a chest infection and asked doctor about it her seemed to have thought that it was a rash of some sort due to one side of her face being a bit on the puffy side said to use pawpaw cream so i brought some but has still made no difference
have noticed the last 2 days when the pawpaw cream is applied that it most irritate it because as soon as it is applied she starts rubbing at it and mainly the parts around her eyes
i have tried to figure out what it is caused by but the only thing i have come up with is that i have replaced my top loading washing machine with a new front loading washing maching which i did end up changing washing powder to OMO for front loaders could this be the cause of her skin problems
i have since figuring this out changed back to old washing powder but just for front loaders but have not seem any changes in her skin as yet how long would it take for any changes to be noticed

Re: 4 month old with bad excema

ok so i have read the advise given and believe that i should have given a bit more info on her and her diet

she is not breast fed she is bottle fed formula has not changed has been on s26 since birth

started her on soilds at about 3 months as she wanted i know its hard to say that she wanted soilds but she did as most of you may know a child even an infant or baby knows what they want even if we dont

ok with soild there was alot of trial and error

started of with the jar/tinned foods didnt like them

she has fresh veggies has nothing added to them

i first thought that she may have had hives as i do to certin meds and soaps but is nothing like that

i have had her normal doctor say that it was milk spots but there is no way that it is milk spots because it always appears worse when she is hot i have had to keep the air con going even on slightly warm days just so she doesnt itch and start rubbing and making it worse

i have had another doctor say that he had no idea what it was- that it was just a rash

i know its excema but not sure what has made it worse nothing has changed in her diet or any other products just the washing powder

Re: 4 month old with bad excema

There are many great laundry powders for senstive skins. I myself use aware for sensitive skin. It is for front loaders as well as top loaders.

I have Atopic ezcema as well with my baby. He reacts to banana and some fomulas, I've used many different treatments but I have found derma veen products toi be the best. when used with each other and not with any other treatment except prescription creams it works great. i used the bath or shower wash which doubles as a shampoo/conditioner, the ezcema ointment, use after bathing (it's thick and acts as barrier as well as moisturizer) and I use the ezcema cream which helps kill any allergens that enter the dry skin and moisterizers. My 2 middle children both suffer with ezcema as well, my daughter also has asthma and anaphylaxia.

Cheers Raven

Re: 4 month old with bad excema

We had the same issue and it was the ice coffee I was drinking while breast feeding. But also was the nappy creams. We were also giving excema creams which he is allergic to as well. So after lots of trial and error and bad dr's we had to change laudry detergent, use only vasoline for nappy rashes soap free bath oil & baby wipes and ego suntain lotion (the new one to the list) hes also intollerent to eggs and kiwi fruit and dairy. But he didn't really start to show the rashes until he was 4 months, before that we were told he had reflux, colic and even teething...

But only change one item at a time for 3 days, if nothing has changed by then then its probably not that. then try taking out another thing. Its frustrating but when you work out which item it is and baby feels better its worth it !!

Re: 4 month old with bad excema

SOO TRUE!!!! I know many kids who have food allegies and they are told their child has colic or reflux.

If it's bad enough, I tell them to send their kid to the operating room and have a scope done. That will tell you soooooooo much inregards to some allergies. Things like a condition called E.E. or Celiac's Disease, all can show up as excema but can pretty much only be diagnosed upone biopsies and a scope in the O.R.

Re: 4 month old with bad excema

Hi, sometimes excema can be cause by food allergies or food intolerances. I would suggest trying to keep a food journal and see if you can find any triggars to the outbreaks of excema.

You could also take out the top food allergens form her diet and see if it gets better. Common food allergies would be milk, wheat, dairy, corn, soy, nuts. (I know she probably isn't eating too many of those at 4 months old but you did not state if you were breastfeeding or not.)

Yes, laundry det. can set off excema as well.

You just sometimes have to fiddle around with things and see if you can find those triggars.
