Re: Toilet Training
Hi there,
We have just come out of a year long battle with the poos. My son picked up toilet training with no problem and has never done wees in his pants but when it came to poo he would always wait till he had a pull up on a night to do it. If he needed to go during the day he would always ask for a pull up.
We started with putting a pull up on him but he had to sit down on the toilet with the pull up on. My theory with this was i wasn't sure if my son knew how to sit down to do a poo as he always stood up to do one when he was in nappies. After we were sure he knew how to sit down then came the battle of trying to get him to do one without the pull up. We went through many stages of rewards, punishments eg. No DVD's, punishment was never smacking or loss of food or anything like that, to just not putting a pull up on till he was asleep. None of it worked and only made him constipated. I took him to the doctor thinking maybe it was a medical thing and the doctor told me to ignore the behaviour for 3 months and everytime he asked for a pull up i was to offer the toilet first and if he said no put the pull up on. I ignored the behaviour for a few weeks and one day i did the usual thing and he actually said that he would try in the toilet. He had no problem going and was actually very suprised that he could do it. Since then we have never had a problem.
My advice to you would be try a rewards chart with something at the end that your son has chosen. One other thing we had was a few presents stashed away in the cupboard for the first week of him using the toilet. They don't have to be expensive presents, we just had a couple of matchbox cars, a colouring book, some pencils and textas. Everytime in the first week that he did a poo he got to go to the cupboard and choose a present.
Good Luck with it and if you have any questions feel free to minti mail me. I know how frustrating it is.
